VATF or GATF with RTC?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I personally don't think this combo would work and wouldn't risk it. In the long run, there's very little that could avoid the belly of an RTC. Even the big GATF posted earlier in the thread would do little more than fill the belly of a big RTC. You could certainly try, but I feel that this will likely end in heartache.

A cat that either tops out at 2' or grows much slower than a RTC would be a better option.

Yea it would kill me growing 1 that big and caring for it for years just to get beat up or killed, don't you risk the same problem with your goonch? I like them as well but if that's also risky I will probably be in the market for a nice tig or jur :)

I think a 3 foot RTC would have a hard time choking down a 20 inch ATF ..... tigers are very slim when small, but put on a lot of girth as they grow, but in all honesty it will be a very difficult combo, and they will only be able to coexist together after the ATF is probably 5+ years old

yea i agree but i don't want to underestimate it neither, definitely not something I will be rushing into anyhow and I will have a long think, but leaning towards forgetting this set up now.

How many people actually have a goliath this size? :D

Very very few but the same can be said for RTC, I see a lot of "big" ones but they never seem to get close to there natural max, I have never seen 1 more that 2' in an aquarium, not saying there not out there but it's rare IME.

Mine is a dwarf goonch, it is a full grown adult. :)

Ah gotcha, so the big bad boy of the goonch world is a no go as well? Lol why are all the coolest fish so hard to keep haha, looks like I'm getting a tig or jur then :) thanks for the advice everyone.

Maybe not. They seem to have a relatively slow growth rate for a big catfish, at least compared to things like an RTC. Egon, who is probably the current MFK goonch champion, had his Indian goonch go from 6" to a bit over 2' in three years, giving a rough growth rate of 6" a year. I feel this is a safe baseline as Egon is a first rate fishkeeper and knows how to make his fish thrive. Based on that, I think if you add a 5-6" yoy Indian goonch to a tank with a 12-18" (about a year and a half old) GATF, you'd probably be ok. Once my guy puts on about another 4-6 inches, I'm going to start really looking for one. They seem to normally come available around January, I suspect when the next batch comes in I'll be good to go. :)

There will always be more 2' RTCs than 2' GATFs around.

Those RTCs will grow to 2' almost overnight.

That RTC is going to eat that silverside of a ATF! lol

Yea I know, I owned 1 before I knew much about them, i learnt the hard way last night and lost my VATF :( I'm having a break from catfish for a while now and probably get a tigrinum eventually.

Make sure you get the ATF first and let it get some size to it before introducing the tig.
