Funny you mention the Aimara and I'll wait for that thread (another bucket list fish for me). Just hear horror stories of driftwood like symptoms (not active).

Id say he started doing this around 14"? Im not sure how old he was but Id guess he was 4 years old when I let him go (@16-17"). Armatus tend to glide in front of the glass too when bigger but I've yet to see a fish do it in slow motion. Maybe its the clashing of jaws, visible teeth and slow stroll in front of you combo that sets it apart from the rest of the monster fish, i dunno lol. My wife and kids would trip out too.

Mine started begging at about 4".

I think Al is referring to the confident begging. Ive had a couple baby ATF beg also but it was like playing tag, hit the food and jam away. The best part of feeding a big boy (and I know there is a couple big Vittatus (ex)owners lurking) is when you feed in a bunch. Their stomach is bigger so they can eat more, my guy would swim in circles at a high speed catching all the food before it hit the ground (similar to exodon). Smaller pieces made him swirl more (was awesome to witness daily:headbang2). I just wish I had recorded more feedings.

DB- grow them out bigger and im positive you'll relate to me bro

I'm referring to the confident begging as well. I've even been bitten by the fish a few times he's so confident. It is a result of learning that you are their feeder and not a threat as opposed to just a hungry fish learning that you are their primary source of food. It can be trained into the fish IMO. I discussed how to do it earlier in the thread.

From actual Aimara? Or from other Hoplias species? Don't get me wrong, they're no Dorado, but definitely no Mala.....

Rob, I imagine you'll have much better luck then I ever will in getting your fish to develop a begging personality, as I just don't have the time. Like I said my only real "begger" was a fish that was handfed and babied from 5" to 18"+ by the previous owner. I think we're on the same page....... Put in the work and you'll get results. I just wish I had more time :(

Hell, now I'm starting to wonder if I'd even notice? Maybe I need to go re-evaluate them? I usually huck food in and head to the next tank.....

Maybe I need to give more fish away...... :( LMAO.

I was talking about aimara. Still on the bucket lost but no rush :)
