I agree completely. Venomous snakes (venomoid or not) should not be readily available to most people.

Wait, what are you putting in your mouth? Y'all lost me...:screwy:

lol got ur hopes up? x

hots will never be an option for me, venom glands removed or not.
but interesting to see what people think.
i agree with sylvias. personally ibdont think it should be done just so its conveniant for ourselves.

This is going to bring a lot of debate....

I only support venomoids in certain situations. As I said in the other thread, the only reason I can see for having a venomoid is to use in educational shows for the handlers and audiences safety. The audience should not know it is voided though.

When the procedure is done properly (Venomoid inc. is the only company i know that is legally allowed to do that.) It is an entirely safe and humane procedure. The entire venom gland and duct is removed and is replaced with silicon that can grow with the snake. The incision is done in the mouth so there is no visible scarring and the animal appears natural. They do still have their teeth! It is also done under anesthesia and all the proper medical tools (when it is done PROPERLY) Venomoid snakes have never shown to have a problem feeding or digesting.

There are a lot of backyard hack jobs that are probably very cruel to the animals and are generally not done anywhere near right and these can result in the snake regrowing it's venom glands.... so a snake that was believed to be voided can end up delivering venom.

I do not believe the general public should be aware that this is even possible and I do not believe that they should be kept just for personal reason. If you want a venomous snake get a venomous snake (and all the training that goes with it). Not that venomoids do not have a good use, just that it is a very narrow use and they should not really be 'created' on a regular basis. Venomoids should also always be treated with the same caution and respect as any other venomous snake because there is always that chance that something didn't go right with the procedure. (even with venomoid inc. although I have never heard of them having bad work)

I don't see an problem with a licensed vet preforming this operation. Done right, it is not cruel at all. It allows a beginner to attempt a hot while being just a tiny bit more confident. I don't fully trust the surgery however, and would still treat the animal as a hot.

That being said, Venomoids work is A+ stuff. The animals come with PIT tags that identify the animal as a venomoid, and paperwork. I know a guy who keeps some of their snakes (a few different species of cobra, a monocle and i cant remember the others... a formosa maybe?) and he puts a live mouse in every 6 months and provokes the snake into biting it, then observes the mouse for a few days. The mouse always lives, and it should with the implants put in by venomoid to prevent tissue regrowth. The snakes are treated as hots as they should be, and are never handled. They are always in a locked room along with his legit hots.

Its like saying its cruel to spay or neuter a dog. It doesn't affect the animal at all (there's absolutely no evidence that a venomoid lives a shorter life due to difficulty digesting food. Go ahead, try to find some.....) and I just don't see the problem. A resonsible reptile keeper should have the opportunity to puchase any type of snake, venomous or venomoid, as long as the animal is well taken care of. People just need to realize that you don't buy them as a pet to just play around with.
this as well^

Aww look at all these wonderful rational people! It's nice to see that

Yeah it is nice. I actually though this was gonna be a problem thread for a while. I saw a lot of these on fauna that got out of hand real quick. People on MFK are generally way more mature and its nice to see that a hotly debated topic can be... well, debated, without anyone getting belligerent and disrespectful.

the problems arise when someone insults someone else because of their beliefs on a subject, such as in the "hot snakes handling" thread posted by johnny cichla

This ^^. Any of the people here calling it cruel own a neutered or spayed dog? or a descented ferret? Ever seen what they do during a spaying operation? It looks like cleaning a turkey :D.

Now I do agree with the lack of responsibility part, everyone being able to own venomless hots is probably a bad idea. I'd worry about unscrupulous dealers performing the operation badly or incorrectly.

Here is a better one:
