Does anyone keep a venomous snake and how would you take care of them

The Question should have been where does one get the expericence to keep HOT (Venomous) Reptiles?

OR

A better question, why are Venomous reptiles cheaper to purchase than non Venomous reptiles?

i owned a few in my passed just have to know what your doin.
same care as any other snake
depends on species as well

So your saying that you got experience on how to keep venomous reptiles by keeping them, or keeping non venomous reptiles. I say mainly crazy people keep venomous reptiles, people that have a secret death wish. About 99% of everyone that keep reptiles has been biten at sometime or another, just with venomous your putting your life on or a limb on the line. Yeah alot of them are beautiful and fascinating but beauty or fascination isn't enough to die for, unless your crazy.

Plus there is nothing worse than getting bitten by a venomous reptile and getting all the Hospital bills after living to talk about it, plus being hit with a fine and or possibably jail time for endangering the welfare and safety of others around you and these charges can be either State, County, City and or federal.

proaquatics...

Everytime a hot keeper get bitten, it's bad press. Even if it's a well-trained zoo-keeper who had experiences for years, we get bad press for the hobby.

The reason why venomous are cheaper is because there is no demand for them when there are bred. Anyway... it depends on your definition of "venomous."

I am looking into Beaked Snakes and Malagasy Hognosed Snakes as my venomous. :D Not toxic enough to have any serious damage, but observable effect can be seen for a few days. Of course, that's assuming if I am stupid enough to let them chew for more than five minutes.

I recommend buying a bunch of the meanest non-venomous snakes you can and try keeping those without getting bit. Then if you do get bit realize; I'd be going to the hospital now or dead...

Hot keepers are divided into two groups; idiots who want hots to show off and pro keepers who keep them because they like the animals. You can always tell because pro keepers don't talk about having them! Nothing, and I mean nothing gives the reptile hobby more bad press than irresponsible venomous keepers.

First rule of Venomous Snake Club is....Don't talk about Venomous Snake Club ;)

I had a western rattlesnake years ago

Well put Simon. It's really amazing the stuff you can buy. I was at reptile show over the weekend that had loads of hot herps. I was amazed at the number of different species. Off the top of my head I can remember seeing Gila and Beaded lizards, various rattler species, copperheads, many species of pit vipers, Boomslangs, Green Mambas, Gaboon x Rhino crosses, Tiapans, and various cobra species. The two that blew my mind were the captive bred King Cobras for sale and a freakin' adult Black Mamba!

When keeping venomous species I like to think that it's not if you get bit, but when. I talked to some lady selling Western Diamondbacks and she said that the antivenom they get is only good for a month and it's expensive as hell to get.

More people die from horseriding or owning a dog here... never been a fatality in the UK from hot keepers. Don't know what your statistic is in the US. I think if you do it intelligently and know your limits it isn't a problem. Personally I think venemous are the most interesting snakes. Remember not every bite will kill you... there are different types of venom with every snake, some will be more effective than others, some snakes will be more efficienct at injecting it than others. There will always be people who overdo a bad reputation for keeping venomous, then there are the stupid who underestimate it too.

Who are you to tell me to go some where else because I made a statement/comment that you don't like? :screwy: If you knew someone was going to get their panties in bunch, I wouldn't have said anything at all. But I thought that was what forums where for, my mistake, huh.
