Last week I took a piece of my (dying) venus flytrap and put it in my aquarium, as an experiment. I am sure that they frequently get submerged in their native habitat, and I wanted to see how it would do in the tank. I'm not convinced it will work without peat moss though. But I've got 2 w/gal and I just started adding Flourish and Flourish excel. I'll let you know how it goes.

But just out of curiousity...has anyone tried peat in an aquarium? Would it harm fish?

The Venus Fly trap lives on sphagnum moss which floats like a raft keeping the plant above the water table .It needs oxygen for respiration as we do so I would guess it will die, could be wrong though may be like the amazon sword . To propagate vegetatively remove a healthy leaf with a slice of rhizome attached and place on damp sphagnum or moist peat a little bottom heat (stand on aquarium lid ) will help but make sure it doesnt dry out.
keep us posted as to how it gets on.

i have a venus flytrap "garden" as it were, i find them fascinating and built up a collection. i think it will drown, but apparently theyre arent any carnivorous plants (like venus fly traps) underwater. shame.

sound like it would look cool, might need to eat fish as there wouldnt be to many flies underwater (thats if it survives of course)

Bladderworts are aquatic carniverous plants, see the post I made after discovering a one in my tank. It's trebled its size since I noticed it last week. Still dont know if its a good think or bad think ! quite invasive but interesting !
