Vermiponics - Fish, Plants, and Worms

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Glad to hear that Rivermud.
I'm actually going to be doing this on a small scale soon. I'm working on acquiring a 75gallon one half will have a lid and a light and the other will be covered by a tub filled with gravel and I'll try and grow lettuce/photos out of it. For now it will be constant flow since it's only 7.5"high and going to be fed by a 150gph power head.

I will still have my HOB filters running and do regular water changes however they may decrease just a little in frequency. Since I'm willing to bet a 10gallon grow bed will not handle the complete bio load of an Oscar and a pleco.

If anyone is interested in aquaponics or vermiponics i've subscribed to this thread. I've been doing aquaponics for three years now, I don't have my system going right now due to winter, but come spring i'll begin posting pictures of the new growth. If anyone would like to some of my produce I can post pictures. I've grown all sorts of vegtables and i've had a great success with growing out red bellied pacu, convicts, pangasius catfish, variety of sunfish, bluegill.....and i'm about to begin a business growing out mosambique tilapia.

I'm, very interested in hearing about your experience/results with sunfish, As I've been contemplating using them this year.

I'm resurrecting this thread as I will be posting updates on the progress of plant growth as well as water parameters. My grow bed doesn't have enough plants to really go bonkers yet but the media is doing a very fair job so far. Here in the next few months I will be swapping the grow bed out for a diy wood version that is not the main hood as it is a serious pain to get in and work on the tank with the setup i currently have.

I have been reading this thread and i am interested in trying my hand at AP. Right now though I have a well stocked 240g tank with cichlids and I dont want to discolor the water. I was thinking of doing something simple for now like a sump or HOB filter with gravel and light. Would this produce dis-coloration if i keep the plants groomed or do the tannins come from the soil/break down of plant material?

The discoloration of water from plant root material is minimal. Most discoloring comes from driftwood and decaying matter. My tank is relatively clear atm. Waterchanges solve loads of issues when it comes to tannins. You won't hurt your plants by doing w/c's.

Also, you don't use soil, use a gravel like 1/2-3/4" mix or even lava rock, though getting roots out of lava rock sucks.

Thanks. None of the videos are coming up on my computer for some reason so I missed some details. The worms do okay in the larger gravel?

yeah they do just fine. I currently use expanded clay but i am finding that in my current setup i don't like it as the clay breaks up very slowly over time, whenit does the particles ended up in my tank and all over every item of decor I have. If you have your growbed draining into your tank rather than a sump i would suggest going with gravel. Don't add worms until you have a very healthy bunch of plants going. If you do, the worms will try to leave the growbed to find better living conditions. However, once you have an established growbed the worms will flourish and multiply.
