Very Large Pond Stocking

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
considering channels - are they mid water swimmers? And will they eat 2 foot koi? Are their any other colors besides black and albino?

I don't think a channel would mess w/ a 2 foot koi. Unsure on any other colors than reg. and albino.

looking at other fish, and discovered that tilapia have been introduced to US and survovived the winter - would these work? I was looking at Tilapia buttikoferi but i think they are not as hardy as some of the other species. Are their any that will tank 50F water temperatures?

The more hardy cool-tolerant tilapia species might be illegal in Texas, you'd have to look into it. I think you might be able to try chanchito also, they come from Argentina and should be able to handle the cooler water temps. I would put in some gar, not gators but smaller species like spotted gar.

gars might be cool - my parents want to stick to mostly natives, i found out :( So gars are in, tilapia are out. Only non - native fish my parents want are the koi. But gars might work... :)

Peacock bass! they seem to survive the winters in florida just fine. And you could sell any of the fry they have for some extra money.

Someday I hope I can build a lake...

If you go with the stream idea you could have the 2nd pond set up out of site and chock full of "ugly" fast growing plants for filtration, and somewhere in between just a huge box of bio-media that all the water flows through for extra filtration.
