Sorry for the loss, that really sucks.

I had the same red ooze out of the anus of a male motoro I lost a couple weeks ago. He looked fine in every way the day before, and then suddenly dead, while the female that was with him was fine in every way. I'd guess with yours it was being in a tank with no circulation that was the final straw. I'm always so paranoid about my FX5 hoses that I have all of them taped in place, so if the clamps give then they're still secured.

funny thing is, that it was duct tapped down as well... i donno if he hit it or something... but i donno...
 
Sorry for your loss.

I woke up to a tank housing a 10" tigrinus and a 6" flower ray with only an 1" of water left in it. It had blown b/c of a bad stand (not level). Both fish were fine. I don't know if your Hystrix was without circulation for longer or not but I think it may have had too many strikes against already having been bullied by another ray and also moved to another tank.
