Viable sized tank for polys.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If that was me ill go 96"x30"x20" cause you still going to add some substrate maybe 1".
+1

So as some of you may know I'm going to be building a tank in the next few months (hopefully once it starts to warm up) but I was thinking since poly's are bottom dwellers I could do a really short but large tank I was thinking a 96"x36-40"x16". Do you guys think that is too short. I just really am not a fan of tall tanks and it'll save me some money in filtrations also I feel like it will be a lot easier to maintain. Any input will be helpful!
that is super exciting! Can't wait to see how everything works out. I don't really like tall tanks either(at least maintenance wise) cause I'm 5'1. Although, personally would do 24" so that way they have some vertical distance to swim. that way the tank would at least be as tall as the polys get long. :) 24" might sound tall, but that is the height of a standard 55 gal, so not too bad.

Plus having it a little taller might make the tank more stable? especially with the length and width of the tank. and you could always keep the water lower than 24", but having it taller would give you more options of water height to keep it at.

this is for reptiles, but it shows the dimensions. For the breeders and rubbermaid tubs between 180-300gal, show heights of 25".

here is another site with some wide tank widths.
270 Wide 96 x 36 x 17 Tall, This one shows the dimensions that were similar to yours. So I think it can be done! But it is the only one larger than 125gal that has the height. All the others: wide and tall have a minimum height of 24." Just some things to consider :)

Yeah I guess I could go 24". I'll have to work some things out with it and see what I think will work best. I'm sure there will be many bumps in the road and lessons learned with this build.

This sounds like a great build. I do agree with the others though, a bit of extra height will provide some flexibility stock wise down the road.

Again, I'm not an expert, but that's just some info I found online. at the end of the day it is up to your preferences and what works best for you. And what you want. If height is important to you, Maybe you could talk to a custom tank builder and find out more To see what the options you have for height. :)

Right. I'd hate to do it get it done and it look like crap or it not work in the long run

Awesome that your building a tank. I love those domensions. I too hate tall tanks, your gonna love the width/depth it really changes the entire viewing experience. I think you would be fine with 20 inches.

You going with glass or acrylic ? Dont skimp on the stand. Mine is 27 inches tall (i think) and i wish it were a little taller, makes messing around in the sump a little difficult.

Im going to go glass. I have a place in my town that has really good pricing I was planning to do two 3.5 (give or take) foot panes for the front viewing for viewing and maybe a side viewing panel.

and sump wise i was planning on doing a 48x24x16 sump so i was going to do a 36 inch tall stand
