Videos: Heros notatus breeding

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I thought only H. severus and the undescribed sp. Atabapo were the only two mouthbrooders, but then you never see notatus around so who knows!!! Well, rather, we will in another day or so.

I thought H. sp. "Atabapo" and H. severus are the same species....?

They very well could end up being so. Similiar coloration and both mouthbrooders. I tend to wait until the scientists jump in though. The fact they were imported as sp. 'Atabapo' vs cf. severus though would make me lean towards differant fish for now. Besides, I tend to be conservative that way, too many hybrids already in the hobby not to be cautious. I think sp. Atabapo stay smaller, but then being much smaller didn't save the turquoise sev from being demoted to a color form of H. efasciatus.

I just rather not see the two crossed until we know for (realitively as science gets) sure. It would be like the rotkeil/green mess all over again.

I tend to think they are as well. Keeping the location name is better for keeping up with what they are anyway. I haven't seen any collection location info for H. severus so who knows.

According to Kullander's 1986 revision of the genus, H. severus ranges from the upper Rio Negro through the upper and central Orinoco in Venezuela, as far as the Rio Caura near the lower Orinoco ...

I'm sure they will end up being merely locational differances, since they do overlap (unlike the turquoise/green distribution which doesn't), but like I said, I tend to be cautious with them until it gets worked out.

Do they look different? Most of the pics I could find seemed to be similar to my old pair of "Atabapo" (imported by Belowater 2-3 years ago)... Would be nice to see what the Rio Negro H. severus looks like.

sweeet!!! please post vid

Amazing! You've got the magic touch ;).

If you've invented viagra for fish, share the wealth :naughty:...lol
