5. Dec. 5th. Eggs hatched almost exactly three days after spawning. We have wigglers :D

And I guess they are not mouth brooders after all :)

Amazing! You've got the magic touch ;).

If you've invented viagra for fish, share the wealth :naughty:...lol

LOL I think they really like that particular rock...

6. Dec. 14th. Things are going well. The parents left the wigglers under/next to a rock and haven't moved them. Hope to see some free swimming fry soon :)

Not sure what I was thinking but #5 date is way off :grinno:

Looking good Peter. I had my first group hatch this morning. It looks to be a pretty small spawn. If they are still there tonight I'm going to steal them.

Indeed, I was surprised they bred and hatched in my water. Looked to be 150 or so of them.

what is different about your water that they wouldnt hatch?

Peter, your tank was my inspiration to go get some larger river stones and rearrange my tanks so natural territories can be established and the larger stones can be used for spawning. Thats awesome they spawned for you. What are your plans for the fry? When do you plan to remove them?

That's a big brood! now sure how many I have.

So do you think breeding early would affect their growth?

Thanks :) Yes I think you can manipulate their behavior a lot by arranging rocks, dw, etc.

I don't know what to do with fry yet. I'm tempted to give the parent a shot and keep them together for as long as possible. The problem is feeding the fry in a 55 with 2 HOB and 1 sponge filters - hard for them to find food initially. I did have success raising orangehead fry this way, but orangehead parenting is probably on another level!

Atlanta has extremely soft tap water. Once the CO2 bubbles out it has a low PH to. It is ideal for lots of SA cichlids. My water is much harder and has a PH of 7.2 after aging. I was going to start adding homemade blackwater extract to help with breeding but so far so good in my tap. Most blackwater fish will not spawn successfully in my tap water.

that is interesting. ive never tested my tap pH and hardness. i always just thought that the fish could breed in any water they lived.
