it is worth it. Because fry for $5 then it take you a year and a half to get to that size. And that is a nice fish. oh man with aquarium light and take a picture without flash. He will look cool.
Seeing that it is nearly full grown at 20cm how big a tank do you think I would need for it? Would a 58gallon 4x14x20 be big enough and will it be too aggressive to have a tank mate with it?
Don't know how big it'll get. 20 cm is 7.5 inches...Zonatus could get almost twice that size. If it's not Zonatus, it could be done growing. I'd get as big a tank as possible...at least a 75? I don't know. Whether u can keep other fish? No way for me to tell w/o knowing how it's been raised til now, hybrid or not, what species, etc. you just have to try it out.
I am a little unsure about getting it now as you see in the picture it has some damage to its side, also you will notice it is in a tank with angelfish which to me seems like it must be a pretty peaceful fish don't you think? All my other Americans would have killed angelfish.
I bought her but the photo was obviously taken of her good side because she was very grazed on her other side. Should damage to her scales like this heal and look like normal or do you think she will be scarred for life? I have added methylene blue to the water to help it heal.
By the way apparently the damage was caused by her grazing along the rocks in the tank as there was way too much stuff in the tank for a larger fish like her to move around.
She should heal fine. Step up your water changes for a week or two & aim to keep the nitrates very low (under 10) and the healing will be faster.
I agree w/ the other comments - not a zonatus, looks like a hybrid. Will probably be a very good looking fish with good food & clean water. Keep us posted.
If this fish is stunted I think I might know why. The previous owner for the last year has only fed it fish flakes and feeder gold fish, surely that would attribute to poor growth.
