Vieja ID confirmation and sexing

Here is a pic of each side which seems a lot worse than the advertisement photo but still got him because I had already driven 30mins to get him and felt obligated to save him from the neglect of his previous owner. There seems to be pigment in a lot of the grazed spots which I guess is a good sign that a fair bit of the scale still remains as I read somewhere that only the top 1/3 of a fishes scales have color. Also I am calling him a him because he seems to have paired up with my female salvini and both of them are nesting and preparing some slate in the the tank which I think is also a good sign of his health.

Does not look like a pure bred hartwegi nor other fish.. But kool looking.especially with the pink redness

I agree that is has to be a hybrid but it is pretty hard to find any vieja's in Australia that aren't but this fish has potential and I think I will hopefully be able to have a pretty nice fish after a month or so of healing and fattening up.

To me the one from the other post looks like a stressed out syn. Yours definitely looks hartwegi.

My new Male Vieja is starting to heal nicely now, is it very common for them to start getting a purple color on their gill plates? and is it a trait of any certain veija species?
