Hello all, this is my first post so I'll start by saying thanks for all for the information I have gleaned from this site, the good, the bad, & the ugly. :). It has certainly been interesting reading. I have been keeping African cichlids for the last year & have learnt a lot about this hobby, but I've recently bought a new tank, 6x2x2, & have a female Festae, Jack Dempsey, Red Texas, Pleco, & a synodontis in there. All cichlids are 4 to 5 inches & for the most part everything is going ok. What I want to know is, can I put a Vieja in there & not have any problems. I know these fish are unpredictable but is it worth a shot or is it an absolute no no. I don't really have a grasp on how big these fish get, & I wouldn't like to see them cramped in there as overstocking does not do it for me. So, is there enough room for another fish or have I got enough already. Thanks..
.

I would say no. They get huge and your tank already is populated enough, imho...

Thanks for your opinion Miguel, I thought that might be the case. What if I biffed the Texas, would the Vieja still be to big with JD & Festae.

You can try. Keep up the water changes. Keep them all at the same size, best uf they were all males and see what gives

I'd say you could put a vieja in there but make sure you keep up with your water changes and other maintenance. Keep an eye on aggression as well and adapt as you go. Good luck. :-)
Oh and welcome to MFK!

Adding another Vieja is not going to be crowded as you have a 180 gal tank. Aggression is what you have to watch out. Vieja is just big, but they are among the least aggressive big cichlid, so the fish you have to watch out are the Red Texas and Festae. JD is not going to be he problem as it is a mellow fish. In fact, I think you should add a few more cichlids to spread out the aggression, something like Green Terror, Severem or Chocolate cichlid that are only mildly aggressive.

Not really into adding fish to dilute aggression. It took a while to figure out my Africans & my first attempt was to keep adding fish but I was never really happy with it. There will always be aggression in a cichlid tank but overcrowding doesn't reduce aggression it just spreads it out. My African tank is now relatively calm & I love it that way but it took time & delicate balance to achieve. My Red Texas is the one I'm keeping an eye on in my American tank as he is called Bruiser for a reason, but if I biff him I think maybe a Vieja would be a good replacement. Thanks for all the ideas so far.

Just do do not geta Maculidauda, aka as black belt, if you know what s good for you :)

Lol I absolutely agree with Miguel. No Maculicauda or Zonatus. Maybe Hartwegi or Synspilum. Syns get fairly large and IME have the Oscar type of mentality. They won't be the aggressor but they won't let themselves get bullied easily.

Please excuse my ignorance but I thought Vieja was a synspilum. I'm new to Americans & I saw an earlier post with the syn & convict aggression video from cyberman. Anyway, when I saw his Syn I just had to have one & when I googled it it came up Vieja Synspilum, but anyway that's what I want, what cyberman has. Can anyone enlighten me.
