Visually speaking, more than 4 fish in a tank is too much.

I disagree. That’s a pretty myopic perspective. What about schooling fish? A ball of 30 fish zooming around as one is something you can’t recreate with just a handful of fish.

Then there is the whole screensaver view.. taking the whole thing in as a whole.. layers of different fish moving at different angles… I could go on and on….

Yes, but the bait ball or schooling fish you mentioned, i mentioned. I have no problem with that.

And i don't have a problem with the different layers thing as well. But the problem is, a large group of large dissimilar fish works against this mise en scene.

Small fish over a reef yes. Small fish along the river bank of the amazon yes. Large fish in a school perhaps. But large fish in close proximity of different species, who are not schooling? This works against empty space.

Having said all this of course this is a myopic view, to each their own.

Just some food for thought though as i've milled about this aquarium art thing in my head for going on 35 years.

I hear you... for me the big thing is the activity level. Fish that just sit there hovering all day are not that exciting. The same for pretty much any fish where the only thing interesting about them is feeding time.

And that's why I keep goldfish and wet pets. They like to interact.

Different strokes for different folks. There are a lot of MFKers who are big time fans of JDM style tanks...big tanks crammed full with big fish. In the minority on MFK are the Takashi Amano fans.

We will all have to agree to disagree.

For fun, I bet most of you newer members haven't seen some of the old JDM threads like this one. It's very interesting that someone always posts at least one picture of an Amano tank on every JDM thread. It appears that the love of JDM tanks was the driving force in creating MFK.

Amano I love, well not him per say, but the stuff he uses. But i'm not talking about overstocking really. I'm talking about my eyeballs being able to process things.

I'm hoping that last tank is just a holding tank for the family dinner that night. I'm not even seeing any life support on the tank at all... unless that's a bubbler hanging on the wall above it.
