This topic was discussed years ago, but as Duane stated adding acid based anything to ones tank can result in a shift of water parameters. Ascorbic acid also has a piss poor shelf life, and unlike some of the products designed for chloramine, any resulting free ammonia will still be left behind for ones biological filtration to deal with. This can be an issue for those like myself that have high pH values, and perform 80-90% water changes. Seachem Safe is pretty damn cheap, and also lasts most users several years, or more.
For chlorine only, sodium thiosulfate purchased in bulk wins hands down.
