Yeah I'm also in the process of trying to makeing a successful planted tank and this site is a life saver.

This is a great site for sure! One forum I spend a lot of time on is Aquatic Plant Central. Very helpful people, tons of guides to read and journals to follow, tons of questions answered, overall a great site if you want to learn about planted tanks. I went from knowing nothing to knowing a heck of a lot just from that forum. Very helpful.

On the algae problem... I had a similar problem when I set up my 15 gallon. I spot treated the algae with Seachem Excel and increased my CO2 production. The algae completely disappeared in 3 days. It floated to the top and I sucked it out with my python. I thought it would be a lot harder to get rid of! The key is striving for stable water conditions. At the time I was changing something in my tank every time I came to check on it and that wasnt helping at all.

there are a lot of quality planted tank forums out there.

i've been dumping double doses of excel into the tank. that along with an increase in co2 and a shorter photoperiod seem to be keeping the algae down. i also planted some stems to use up all the nutrients in the water column. i hope things clear up as fast as it did for you

updates?

i blacked out the tank for almost a week and added a flying fox to get rid of the string algae. also added stem plants to suck up the excess nutrients. i have a green water problem though. gotta do a water change and get my co2 tank refilled. i'll post pics later this week.

drained the tank and decided to do the HC emersed... also added more aquasoil to the back left corner. hopefully the HC will take off and i'll get to fill up the tank again.

I really hate baby tears because they are so hard to get established... I think you will have better luck growing them without a tank full of water and just a wet substrate like you're doing now.
