Vulture Catfish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The vultures are really nice cats.

I have two. The larger one is in the 15,000k video in my sig. look around the 40 second mark. My small one is in a 180g with a ATF and a few severums.

At the 40 sec mark, what is that on the left of the 2 species?

My experience so far is they're fine with other fish that not small enough to be eaten, I've never noticed any aggression with mine at all. Maybe its like many fish you get the odd bad one!

Thanks. The 1st and the 3rd sentences are true of almost all cats. Have you seen what the datasheet I linked says?

"A true scavenger that is also a vicious predator. Its unique dentition allows it to bite other fishes and remove chunks of flesh. Often attacks the catch of fishermen while they are hooked or netted. This ability has given the name bagre matchete (machete catfish) in Venezuela and Colombia. They are so vicious in their attacks that they sometimes stay attached even when their prey is removed from the water.

Tankmates should be chosen with great care. While it appears this fish mainly attacks wounded fishes, it certainly has the ability to rip any tankmate to shreds should it desire to do so."

Some state this stems from a mistake in a book this description is taken from - this description was given to another fish but made it into the datasheet for Calophysus macropterus.
