almost all of the postal service’s losses over the last four years can be traced back to a single, artificial restriction forced onto the Post Office by the Republican-led Congress in 2006.
At the very end of that year, Congress passed the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act of 2006 (PAEA). Under PAEA, USPS was forced to “prefund its future health care benefit payments to retirees for the next 75 years in an astonishing ten-year time span” — meaning that it had to put aside billions of dollars to pay for the health benefits of employees it hasn’t even hired yet, something “that no other government or private corporation is required to do.”
As consumer advocate Ralph Nader noted, if PAEA was never enacted, USPS would actually be facing a $1.5 billion surplus today:
By June 2011, the USPS saw a total net deficit of $19.5 billion, $12.7 billion of which was borrowed money from Treasury (leaving just $2.3 billion left until the USPS hits its statutory borrowing limit of $15 billion). This $19.5 billion deficit almost exactly matches the $20.95 billion the USPS made in prepayments to the fund for future retiree health care benefits by June 2011. If the prepayments required under PAEA were never enacted into law, the USPS would not have a net deficiency of nearly $20 billion, but instead be in the black by at least $1.5 billion.

This is a scam by the right to privatize the post office and sell it off to their buddies, and at the same time to 'bust' the unions that they hate so much. The new private owners will then ( just watch and see) figure out some BIG scam to rip off the customer and then the taxpayer by price fixing etc and/or deliberately crashing the service into the ground. If you think UPS or Fed-Ex will deliver your mail for $0.40 you are surely crazy in the head

Come on David, they don't want to heart that. They want to blame the government sure, but not that part of it. What were you thinking spreading truths around.

"As the old saying goes, sometimes it's better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt. This is an example of how and why Americans are politically illiterate and we're in the mess we're in as a nation.
People who claim it's his fault because he was in office when it happened, are either stupid or lazy. Likewise, Postal workers and leftists who believe the story I'm about to cover are either politically disingenuous for putting out the story or stupid for believing it without doing their own easy research.
I saw a Facebook post today from a friend of mine taking the Bush Administration to task for bankrupting the Post Office causing all of the current problems in the Post Office by requiring it to fund pensions for 75 years into the future. The title of the piece my friend is advertising is How the Right Wing destroyed the U.S. Postal Service.
I'll admit the provision in the law he's talking about seems stupid at first blush, insane even, but is it right to lay it on the political doorstep of the right wing?l
Now, after poking around the Internet for minutes, maybe an hour but nothing resembling weeks,I found some interesting information about this law.
According to Govtrack.us the law in question, H.R. 6407 the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act passed the House by a voice vote and unanimous consent in the Senate. Now not only did the GOP not have a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate, all 44 Democrats and the lone independent in the Senate consented to the bill:
Votes: Dec 8, 2006: This bill passed in the House of Representatives by voice vote. A record of each representative's position was not kept.
Dec 9, 2006: This bill passed in the Senate by Unanimous Consent. A record of each senator’s position was not kept.
Additionally, two of the three cosponsors for this bill were Democrats and you just don't get more liberal than Henry Waxman (D-CA):

Cosponsors:
Danny Davis [D-IL7]
John McHugh [R-NY23]
Henry Waxman [D-CA30]
It really aggravates me that in this day and age , the Internet age, people apparently computer literate and Internet savvy enough to use Facebook take neither the time nor the effort to do even the most minor due diligence in order to avoid looking the fool in public. And the real problem is that this kind of crap bleeds over into our American politics and these people vote.
Situations like this, the lack of thoughtful analysis, due diligence and knee-jerk reactions is a large part of why America is in the trouble she is in socially, economically and politically."

well done for your cut and paste abilities.(sarcasm...the lowest form of wit)
:)
I do think that Ralph Nader has some considerable weight to his opinions when he speaks. Do you know who he is and what he represents?

When the GOP is in the majority it is a GOP house..when a GOP president is in office its a GOP presidency...end of!....whether or not they have a filibuster proof majority is irrelevant, or it used to be until it became so abused by the GOP...

POLITICAL THREAD ALERT!
