Wal-Mart and fish..

The two Zebra Loaches you see in my loach blog are actually from Walmart in Indiana. That was the only good walmart fish dept I have seen. They guy running it seemed knowledgeable too.

My walmart isnt that bad really, no worse than my LFS. The tank racks at my walmart are actually better looking than my LFS and ill see the occasional illness and dead fish but its not really that bad. The betta cups on the other hand are horrible. I got my betta from walmart since a small kid had been tormenting the fish and was preparing to toss the betta cup an all down an aisle....he had about inch of water which consisted of mostly waste and mulm. I will probably end up buying a bichir from walmart this week as they are only 7bucks and male my LFS's bichirs look sick.

Yep, all wal-marts in AZ no longer sell live fish. They still sell the equipment and everything. I am not sure the reasoning behind. Probably a decline in sales as they probably dont make a lot of money from it and plus they dont pay anyone to clean over there or anything because the tanks always looked nasty.

first off i'm what you call a "fish dork" (at least thats what my GF calls me) i feel sorry for the oscar's and the pictus cats at WM every time i see them they appear to be starving whit their bellies sank in...(sickning really) i'll casually walkover to the fish food open some shrimp pellets, freeze dried krill, freeze dried blood worm cubes and some veggie flakes and put some in the tanks for them!!:headbang2:headbang2

then one time a lady that worked there (obviously not the head cashier) asked me "just what do you think you're doin'?!?!"
me: what does it look like i'm feeding your fish the look like they're starving
Her: "just how do you know they are starving?!?!"
me: do you see their bellies?
her: "yea"
Me: they look like the starving kids in ethieopa their bellies all sank in...
her: "OH, i thought thats just how they looked...they are tropical fish!!
me: :ROFL::ROFL::screwy::screwy::grinno::grinno::cry::cry: poor fish.

My WM SUCKS.
The ladies that "care" for the fish don't speak english very well.. and when I was talking to one she told me about how all 238751926591 of her mollies died, I asked how they died and what size tank they were in, her:
I went on vacation and forgot feeding.
and i put chicklits in tank with them before i left.

:irked:

And I asked the same lady how much(I knew they were free lol) their ramshorns were, since their tanks were overrun with them... after finding 4 employees who spoke english, they kept trying to tell me that they were apple snails, and that I should buy some violet gobies for my 55g FW...

I couldn't help but laugh after a while of these people trying to tell me a pest-snail was $2 a peice.

My local Walmart has been selling fish for years.

Over a month ago I picked up a couple juvenile African cichlids (Kenyi and Melanochromis auratus). They have both been doing great and are healthy as can be.

It must depend on your local Walmart. The one around here keep their fish well, and look right on par with any lfs.

and I thought I was the only one who busts open packages of food and feeds them.. I've netted fish out of the wrong tanks and put them back in the right tanks before too.

Everytime I go with my girlfriend she find people and bugs the crap out of them "excuse me, excuse me! theres a dead fish in here.. can you get it out?"
