sounds like a 50% or more WC with a dose of prime is the way to go.. the only thing im worried about now is if the cold tap water will shock my one tropical fish. i have a 6-8 in. clown loach i picked up to clean out some snails. that has for the most part happened so now i need to find the clown loach a home so i dont have to worry about cold water changes.

If you do a 50% water change, and fill back with cold water, you will mostly likely kill your fish.

I would suggest smaller, more frequent changes.

~210 gallon setup and this is what I do.

Day before PWC

1. Fill trash can bought just for this and not used for anything else with RO DI water. (You can use tap, just make sure you treat it)
2. Put a powerhead and heater in trash can(If it's a salt setup add salt)
3. Go to bed.

Day of water change.

1. Wheel the trashcan next to my tank
2. Drain desired amount from the tank while vacuuming the gravel/sand.
3. Use a small pump to pump the water out of the trash can and into the sump(if you don't have a sump you can just pump it into the display tank)

Great idea, i have a nice 1800 gph pump that i could use just for water changes. I am only changing 30 gallons with buckets. Sucks

Yep after our first move and bringing the majority of ~40 gallon that were in the tank in buckets to our new house. I spilled the first bucket when I tried to pour it into the tank and from there on I got to hold them on my shoulder while my girlfriend siphoned them back into the tank to keep it from spilling and messing up the scaping she'd just done. After that I learned real quick how quickly those buckets get heav and just use an extra pump we had lying around rather than breaking my back.

well irst of all davdev i have cold water northern native fish.. i have done big water changes with cold tap water.. they dont mind.. the loach may die but hes temporary anyway. I have a 30 gal barrel and RO water in my house but 30 gallons is not a 50% change. maybe a drip drain system is what i need.. constent water change... hmmm anybody want a huge clown loach cheap?

you did ask about the effect on tropicals, which is why I replied. Native fish should be fine with cold water going in. I have a large school of Fathead Minnows that I do large changes of cold water with that deal just fine. Cichlids or your loach would be another story.

thats why i need to ditch the loach. I had him for aid in snail annihilation. his job is done here.. he needs a new home.

Yes i had to use spell check on annihilation.. lol

I used to do this method but made it more efficient since I have a 375g, 175g, 125g, and 60g tank. I perform about a 30-40% WC on each tank every week.

1. I upgraded my trash can to a 275g tote, it is in my garage.
2. I let an airstone run in the tote when filled to age and aerate the water.
3. I add Prime to condition my tap water. Also add some RODI water as well.
4. I have access to hot water so I add enough hot water not to shock my fish.
4. Instead of wheeling a giant (and heavy!) water container around, I purchased a large sump pump (maybe $100 at aquaticeco.com), connected it to about 50ft of garden hose and put a loc line adjustable return on it. I can bring the hose to any room in my house and put it on any tank.
5. THE KICKER! I bought a remote control power switch (like for xmas trees) and can turn the pump on and off from the in the house instead of running back and forth to the surge protector by the 275g tote. This gets me much more exact fill levels.
