Wallace's shoehead catfish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I notice with every fish I've kept when you turn the lights on there's an adjustment period. Thoughtnthat was common knowledge. They're lighter when they're sleeping. My gold wolf loses its black bar completely when asleep for instance. My Trachy's belly gets more white patches. The head may get a little grey instead of
Pitch black. I wouldn't worry. If you want can add some salt to be safe. As far as a poly ramming into it and it not being phased. I'd say that's a dw cat for you...

Ahh so I was right, this is good to know.
Lol, I think the senegal bichir just didn't see it at first he kinda stopped for a second then just kept on swimming like nothing happened.

Well Mr.shoehead thinks he's funny. So I decided to leave him in their til 5am and then move him because I thought he'd be easier to catch. When I found him he had moved from behind the intake tube of my emperor 400 to near one of the 2 intake tubes for 2 cascade 1,000's I'm putting there temporarily. I thought this would be easy, I filled up the bucket with some water with a cup and by the time I had finished he had drifted down to the strainer part and was stuck/resting against it. I tried to get him with the cup but he swam away after rhe 2nd try. After slowly trying to catch him, he made his way back to where he originally was and I hand caught him with ease. He's a very odd fish, he has no problem being hand caught but dislikes nets and cups and everything else.
Also he was playing dead when he went into the bucket -_-

Oh and by the way, do yall think he'd use a pleco breeding tube or a little cave? I got them back when I had an albino pair of bristlenose plecos I bred from time to time.

I ended up putting 2 pots in there with a piece knocked out because I couldn't find the driftwood yet and it wouldn't have sunk yet anyway. Once I get home I'm gonna find some of the driftwood I hide.

So I'm not too sure if he's eating ever since I moved him to the 20 gallon I see a little bit of the food goes away but I'm thinking it's the few ramshorn snails that somehow found a way into the tank eating it. I was looking at what live aquaria feeds there diversden fish and for the catfish it said live ghost shrimp. I'm going into town today and I can pick up some ghost shrimp from either a petco/petsmart/walmart. Maybe pet super market if they have them, can't remember exactly. Anyway, what are the risks I run from getting live shrimp to be used as feeders for the little guy from a store?

Anything live from the lfs is a risk. Shrimp can also carry disease as well. Especially ich so would quarantine these things. Would wait and try feeding again. These are like mini gulper cats from their behavior. Try feeding at night when these cats are active.

Yeah... I figured there was still a chance but I didn't know how big of a chance :/. Wait shrimp can get ich? I thought only fish could get ich.. and to think of all the times I put mystery snails in without thinking...
Should I try like 30 minutes after I turn out the lights? Also would the brightness from my phone prevent him from eating or would it help him find the food? When I turn off all the lights there is a faint light from my dehumidifier. It's enough that I could say how many fingers you're holding up 3 feet away but not enough to read a book.
Also what are you feeding yours?

Shrimp won’t show ich but it can be introduced coincidentally with the lfs water etc. Sorry didn’t come out right lol. I would just feed after hours and not flip on lights after 30min. Just so it gets used to a good amount of time on and off. Lights from the phone probably will make it unsettle. Wouldn’t worry about faint lights too much. Been trying cut up tilapia and waving it around the mouth of this thing on fluorocarbon fishing line.

So would there still be any possibility of transferring any diseases if I washed the shrimp off in some newly made dechlorinated water?
Is it working for you?
