I have a question for owners of both species. I know they're both pretty much logs until feeding time but which would you say is the more active of the two? Or is it the same? Yes I realize they both have to be kept alone in a huge tank. I'm trying to decide which of the two I want to keep. I am leaning more towards the Wallago Attu because I like their sinister smile but I see more Wyckii for sale. Which of the two would you keep and why?

I've kept both - wykii every time. I have kept wykii succesfully in communtiy set -ups and alone, they are very active once the lights are out -- great attitude and very interactive - and look brilliant - also far easier to house ultimately .

Attu are not that good to look at (far less attractive than either wallago leeri or the wels - both of which I've kept also) .. also there predatory nature is not that impressive - if you want a cat with big teeth get a bagarius ...

Thanks for your input lophius. It helps to hear from someone thats kept both. I've had a Wallago Attu in the past but gave him to a friend once he was still yung and only 8" but I loved his personality at feeding time. I don't mind "boring" fish so to speak but I do like interaction during feeding time. I'm leaning more towards Wykii because even though they also get huge they don't get as huge as an Attu will.

I dont know about your attu's predatory nature but my 2 footer is extremely predatory he's taken out two 10" aros jardini and a silver a large green terror and an orange pike that was mean. Mine has no personality and has tried to bite my hand more than once. Attu's are extremley aggressive they just have a different predatory nature mine sits on the bottom until something gets too close and then your dinner. Only bad thing is the size these guys get.

well when i had the attu he was still very small so maybe that's why he moved around more. everytime i approaced the tank to feed he would either swim to the top or at least perk his head up and watch the top of the water.

i've had mine since he was 10" he was more active when little the only time now that he is active is when he is really hungry and then he will be scanning the surface for food or I will just be a fish short in the tank.

i was just wondering...isit possible to touch them and stuff??? sumone told me they have the tendency to bite the hand that feeds them :o

I believe if you get one young enough and interact with from the start yeah it would be possible but I think I got mine after it was too late and I never really tried to hand feed or pet him.

so did it like try and bite u or did it just run away from ure hand??? if u take a look at arapaimag's fully grown attu i dont think anyone wud want to hand feed that :p

When he tried to bite me he would have followed my hand out of the tank but hit the top instead. My wallago isnt real skidish hes more willing to stand his ground than dart away. Is arapaimag's wallgo is that a full grown attu or leeri?
