is there anybody on this forum with some experince in keeping walleye or sauger?

if so what size of tank would one need and what are the ideal water parameters?

I had them, they were doing just fine until my heater experiement went bad. Rookie mistake, lesson learned, never will happen again... :swear:

Walleyes get large so I suggest sauger if you can get some. The bigger tank the better but I know everyone can't get a 220 gallon tank.

As for water temp just don't use a heater and you should be fine. Although they would like colder water I had no problems with mine at 65 degrees average. It helps to have you tank downstairs since most houses are cooler downstairs in the basement or so. They don't like lighting and are very shy/timid, well at first anyways. Had mine for like 2 months and they never got used to me, unlike my LMB.

They are bottom dwellers too so try to get sand if you could.

but i thought hat they like rocky bottoms for spawning and stuff
and i can diffinatly get both... the only problem is getting from the lake to my house without causing to much stress and without letting them freeze! lol

Yeah in the wild they live around rocky bottoms but in a tank, I suggest getting sand since it's they do lay on the bottom at times.

They are cool fish, only my Pike was better IMO.

Pretty good info so far. I have a walleye now. I have kept walleye and sauger in the past.

Wild caught walleye tend to be very shy and adapt to aquarium life slowly (if at all). The younger the walleye or sauger the better chance you will have at keeping them successfully. I have had the best luck with very young hatchery raised walleye.

They are relatively easy to ween off of live foods. All of my walleye have eaten raw shrimp and smelt. IME my walleye have been quite personable and will swim up and down the glass begging for food when I enter the room.

Sauger do stay smaller and look better IMO. I have tried and failed to keep one 9" wild caught sauger. If I can find a source for some young sauger I will snatch up a few. I've been looking for a long time though. :(

Good luck!

Here are some pics of the two Walleyes I had until a freak accident happened. They were my favorite after my Northern Pike. I had these pics for a while but forgot I to share it.

And this guy bought whole bunch of walleyes, He's a member here too but haven't heard of him for a while. These are his walleyes, I think he told me he got like 50 of them, dont they look like they belong to the army. Where are you at dude? what's the update on you fishes?

thanx but if they need a 240 gallon i guess i will have to let them go... cause i only have a 90g

Saugar would be a better choice, they average about 15" but large ones have been caught, some over 24". You might not know this but the yellow perch is very closely realted to walleye and saugar, all three belong to the perch family alongside darters. If you want something like a walleye you might want to consider perch.

Didn't know darters were perches...I've kept Iowa Darters amazing little fish. I'm getting more this spring...

 I have kept walleye, but only in my freezer.
