After reading this thread completely, I must say, what I see as the overall issue is the employees, which Wal-Mart employ, lack the education and knowledge we as fish enthusiasts and stewards have.
Employees that have some education in ichthyology are far and few between. If Wal-Mart had a standing operationg procedure on the care and maintenance for their fish stock there would books the size of "War and Peace", by Tolstoy, and volumes that would put the encyclopedia's in The Library of Congress, to shame.
My direct point is educating employees and the general public. I must agree, it would be great, if an employee did not know the answer to a customer's question or was not sure of an answer, that they would have a computer library of where they could access a plausible or correct answer to an inquiry. But it will never happen in our lifetime.
Living in what is known as the White Mountain Area of Northern Arizona, we have only 2 Super Wall-Marts to share commerce with 4 counties, which covers all of the Northern part of Arizona. I have been to both stores infrequently over the past 10 years. I must say I have been really impressed with the conditions of their Aquarium sections. Shocked actually, after reading so many negative comments and remarks in this thread.
Yesterday, I was at the closest Wal-Mart store from my home which is 55 mile away, buying Pedigree brand dog food for my dogs. I happened to notice their aquarium section was downsized quite drastically, and as usual, their tanks and fish were what appeared to be pristine condition, for the lack of a better word. I noticed though they had only half of the amount of display tanks they used to have. I inquired about it and they said they downsized do to not only the lack of sales, but, do to the crunch on the economy, they downsided their inventory. I also noticed they had continued the same actions with their aquarium tanks and other fish accessories as well. They use to sell tanks up to 90 gallons in size. They cut back and do not sell anything over a 30 gallon tank now. HOB's filters are the same way. They use to sell AQUA CLEAR 110's. Now all of their largest HOB's filters are for 30 gallon tanks and they discontinued the AQUA CLEAR line of products altogether. WOW! big surprize there. Somewhat annoyed too, but that's another topic for a different thread.
Again, though my main point I wish to make here is not so much about the corporate hob-knobber's not caring or wanting so much to make big bucks off of aquatic product sales. It's about the lack of educating employees with proper and plausible information and then being able to turn around and convey correct and helpful information to the general public in a diplomatic way to where no one gets butt hurt or is insulted. Sure you're going to have disappointments in things where ever a person shops for one reason or another. Even when purchasing T.P. Nothing is etched in stone and we live in an imperfect world. Wal-Mart may be a corporate giant, but they are just a flea on dog's butt when you look at the over-all sceme of things in life.
