Just an FYI - starting a thread about banning Walmart from selling fish and then telling us about the two fish you bought from Walmart is completely contradictory and the entirely wrong way to support your belief or add merit to the cause.

i have bought them before because i felt bad, i don't want to support them by buying fish there, but i don't like to let the fish die, that doesn't help either, i complained and a store manager called me back about it. They seem to have improved a bit, but surely just temporary to shut people up then back to business as usual. i think it would be better if instead of removing the fish, they made the section a little more elaborate and hired someone with experiance who would take more care, so it could attract more people in the hobby and make it profitable. the way it is now only sets the hobby up for failure because of the products and unhealthy fish they sell. i dunno just my 2 cents

I've always thought that they would say no so I never asked, but that is a good idea. I have thought of it every time. THe good news about walmart though is that i can always get the fish cheap, I have no idea that those golden parrot like fish aren't goldfish and they don't either ;)

alot of Q.Q ing about walmart and cursing has any one walked up to a manager and asked to be allowed to "volenteer to keep up thier aquariums"? as in free of charge. mabey it is that i live in a smaller comunity than some of you but to me and in my experiance dealing with all manner of management if you say "me free better sales" they will let you do almost any thing you want especially if you are saying "for fweeee!!!"

That's not a very good idea. Basically feeding the monster....
Because one walmart will be in good shape fish wise and other people will think other walmarts are as well.

This goes for any store of any kind, if you don't like how things are done there, just don't shop there. Who cares if it is cheaper there, just don't shop there. If the stores lose money, they will just stop carrying those products. It worked for the walmarts in my area. The fish were cheap, but the quality blew (lol), so people stopped buying fish there and then they just stopped ordering more in. Now they just have a few products, but nothing special. The same can happen with any store.
Both walmarts in my area no longer carry fish and another crappy pet store got shut down again.

The only downside to this idea is for the hobbyist looking to get the larger "oddballs" .. A majority of those hobbyist will not fork over that kinda cash w/out seeing the fish first. For some species this certaintly would work. For others not so much. The concept is great, the practical application is hard. The LFS I work at thankfully does this. We keep alot of standard species, and get a few oddballs in.

not really at the lfs i but fish from you order the fish then once you see it you can decide if you want it or not

how many people do you know that bought a fish from walmart and it lasted more then a month? Because I don't know any.
If you aren't specialized fish/animal store you should not be allowed to sell them, thats my opinion.
i got a tetra that lasted me a good 8 years strong lol before i let it hang with my oscar which had his was

My wife and I do water changes in the Betta cups. A manager approached us once and we got nasty. We told her "if they took care of the fish, they wouldn't be dieing and we wouldn't have to be doing this,"
I have complained to managers of different Walmarts about this and nothing ever gets done.
I Have seen tanks with no live fish and dozens of dead ones. When you see one of the tank systems with no fish, it is because they all died. I have seen it happen.
Why do they sell fish that can grow to over 2 feet and the sign says 8 inches.
They constantly stock Pacu and iridescent sharks and on the smaller side, Oscars. They also tell you they will do fine in a 10 gallon tank.
Walmart is a horrible place for fish.
We used to shop at Walmart all the time, now we rarely go in there.

^^^This.

I've come to really hate threads like this. If you don't like the conditions in which a store keeps their fish, then DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR MONEY! Buying their fish is not going to do anything but make the problem worse, you are saving two fish and as a result, possibly contributing to the deaths of thousands more.
