Walmart should be BANNED from selling fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i wont enter any walmart
all of their products are cheap and crappy
what would you expect of purchasing a live animal from them

i had seen the selection of fish at my walmart years ago and it was terrible
fortunately the fish section closed down
i also havent stepped foot in a walmart since then

I work at a pet store
I have fish profiles made up for people to view and I don't sell a fish if I am not comfortable with it.
Now if every pet store employee would do that, there would not be a problem.
Better yet, if every pet store only brought in fish that the average person could handle, that would also solve some problems. Then if they did special orders for larger fish for the above average keeper, it would solve more problems. Any above average keeper would not mind waiting for a fish since they are responsible and normally respect that a pet store does not bring in larger fish like ID sharks, oscars, etc. I am not saying those types of fish should not be for sale, I just am saying that they should be special order since they do get larger than most keepers can handle.

This idea is not impossible, thats what we do at work, but I do not work at a chain. I work at a Mom and Pop shop, so its easier to control things like this.

On principle alone, i kinda like this idea.

i used to work at a petco
i would bring up ideas like these and they gave me a hard time
giving me the 'corperate knows best' speech

i would shop in a place that has these ideas in place
unfortunately there arent any around here

The only downside to this idea is for the hobbyist looking to get the larger "oddballs" .. A majority of those hobbyist will not fork over that kinda cash w/out seeing the fish first. For some species this certaintly would work. For others not so much. The concept is great, the practical application is hard. The LFS I work at thankfully does this. We keep alot of standard species, and get a few oddballs in.

Sucks when you try to help with something, but there is not really much you can do to help
At least you tried :)

We don't have anything that is massively expensive, so it works there, but as a buyer I also understand that if you are buying a really expensive fish, you want to see it first.

this thread has officially made me want to go buy a fish from walmart, but sadly they dont carry fish i like.

WAIT! they sell pictus, for half what petco has them for. hmmmmmmmmm

not here to argue or get anyone mad but ive purchased some koi from walmart once apon a time and they lived for years
but at my wal mart they did get rid of the live fish wich was a good idea because they suck at taking care of fish
but then again ive been to petland and seen numerous floaters even whole tanks of dead fish
if a biz takes care of the fish that it keeps
it should be alowed to keep fish

I dont think they should be banned, but they just need to take better care of their fish.
