Exactly.Walmart shouldnt sell fish.given.But you "rescueing" fish from them is exactly what the want.sales.Leave the fish there.Encourage everyone else to do the same.Fish will die but eventually they will stop selling them if there is no profit in it.

+1

My walmart stopped selling fish, but still sell fish supplies and tanks. They had a constant ich problem. I think they just decided to cut their losses and stop selling fish.

As annoying as it sounds and I know someone will flame me for this, there should be some type of paper work when buying a fish just like there is for adopting animals from a shelter. Fish get the crappy end of the stick where I live and the chains of pet stores will sell anything to anyone. Best example: I was told at PetSmart that ID sharks are fine in a 75 gallon and I could probably get away with less than that if I wanted to.

So there should be some training for fish workers (as well as any animal being sold) and there should be something to slow down the process of buying fish. It would be better off for the fish.

IE: Oscars should not go in 30 gallons haha

Just because they write down on paper that they have a 300 gallon tank, does not guarantee that the tank is actually 30 gallon. People will always tell you what you want to hear unfortunately.

how many people do you know that bought a fish from walmart and it lasted more then a month? Because I don't know any.
If you aren't specialized fish/animal store you should not be allowed to sell them, thats my opinion.

Me...? I saved a Blood Parrot that had ick and was covered in stress spots. I have had him for 5 months now.

Good point, but i think most people just don't know that the fish gets large or that their tank is too small. Therefore some type of standard is better than nothing. You will still get the people that lie, but i think most are just too lazy to use google.

My walmart does not sell fish anymore either since they were losing too much money because of disease and anyone that knew anything about fish just did not go there.

Yes that's true. Responsible people will know to research before buying, the problem is that all animal owners are NOT responsible. This issue speaks for itself, all you have to do is surf the CL pets section. I think LFS should try and better post the estimated full size of a mature specimen that they are selling. I have seen most of the time, it never mentions anything beyond "Large" as a description.

I work at a pet store
I have fish profiles made up for people to view and I don't sell a fish if I am not comfortable with it.
Now if every pet store employee would do that, there would not be a problem.
Better yet, if every pet store only brought in fish that the average person could handle, that would also solve some problems. Then if they did special orders for larger fish for the above average keeper, it would solve more problems. Any above average keeper would not mind waiting for a fish since they are responsible and normally respect that a pet store does not bring in larger fish like ID sharks, oscars, etc. I am not saying those types of fish should not be for sale, I just am saying that they should be special order since they do get larger than most keepers can handle.

This idea is not impossible, thats what we do at work, but I do not work at a chain. I work at a Mom and Pop shop, so its easier to control things like this.
