If you want a showoff fish, then don't go with something drab like a wolf. Sure, they are awesome fish, but ... they don't interact with people in the way that cichlids do. (Or Puffers, for that matter.) From what I've read on here, Fahakas are delicate fish. You probably don't want a fish you have to worry about. Another plus for a cichlid. SOME oscars are showoffs, SOME are shy. I liked the Flowerhorn idea, or just a Midas.
But... you say you aren't a cichlid guy... Have you considered a red tail cat? If you can "adapt" that much for a huge pond-sized tank lol
An African lungfish would be another ideal candidate. They are not (usually) very active, but they definitely do interact with people.
But, if interaction is what you want, you're pretty much stuck on a cichlid, or a puffer - just that cichlids are easier to keep long term. (Also, not sure how long puffers live, but a large cichlid lives for 10 years plus.)
