Some grow on silicates, some grow on lighting that isn't intense enough, some on iron, some on potassium, and even some grow in ideal nitrate to phosphate levels in planted aquaria. To say that nitrate and phosphate is all that grows algae, is silly. As you said, algae is a plant, and just like plants, different types of algae grow on different types of nutrients.
Another issue, you speak of plecos eating plants. Only a handful of the over 500 species eat plants. A vast majority of the loricariids available in the hobby are meat eaters, and wouldn't touch your plants to eat.
The vast majority algae that Aquarium and Aquascape keepers have to deal with use for the most part Nitrates and Phosphates to help them grow, in all Aquariums and especially in planted Aquariums there is the presence of small amounts of algae. Note that the presence of algae isn't necessarily a bad thing, again it is a plant too. But most of people consider it to be a bad or unsightly thing in there Aquariums, I for one like some types of algae that grows in my Aquariums, it makes things look more natural.
Though too much Hair Algae can be a real pain in the butt, and in planted Aquariums Hair algae is the last thing one wants to allow to take hold. It will grow on the plants, taking nutrients from them and eventually placing a strangle hold on the plants and killing them or causing them too look just so messed up that you end up throwing them out. This type of like is seen alot in the Aquarium trade, people think it look very natural until it takes hold in the tanks, and they find out that it is all but impossible to rid your tank of it short of breaking the tank. Even Bleach baths don't work on this stuff. But my RTGG love it.
Dude, what I said was some Plecos will eat your plants, not ALL Plecos. SOME!!!!!!
