want to know about Buttikoferi

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
From what I've heard one of the top aggressive fish, from Africa that does not seem to get along with anyone ;)

i love aggressive fish but i also like to have more than 1 fish in a tank.
i don't like african cichlids very much b/c they don't mix with american cichlids very well, higher pH, and not as colorful, but they very cheap in petstores.

Not as colorful? Which african fish are you talking about?

The Tilapia buttikoferi is not from the rift lakes, but from west africa. I has requirements of water parameters like that of SA/CA cichlids and does not require the high pH. Many keep butti with SA/CA but you will need a large tank and be experienced in keeping large aggressive communities.

There are actually quite a few african fish that are very colourful, I keep CA/SA cichlids, but I have to say there is a massive selection of extremely colourful africans.

The Butti is a very beautiful and interesting fish to keep and watch
I comm it with my Argentea and pike cichilds with no problems

However, in the end I gave him away because it kept attacking my FRT. My FRT got a sore nose coz of all the nips.

I had one that I purchased at 3" grew to about 10" and then became the son of the lucifer...lol...it went banana's...attacking everything...even me when I did water changes.....but they are very personable..and not a push over at all..

If your tank is big enough and you choose to get one, get a dovii and red devil at the same size and let them grow up together. Ive seen a 300 gallon tank with all 3 and they are 12+ inches living together just fine. Great to watch at feeding time, especially with market shrimp or earthworms.

They go fine with large CA/SA's as far as water params, feeding & temps.
