Wanting to breed a CA/SA Cichlid

Texas Cichlids, Convicts, Severums, Jack Dempseys, Salvini, Thoricthys species, T-Bars, could attempt Midevils or Oscars .(which might be a bit much for a 4') Personally i would do Texas.

They were what i originalky wanted to do, because they have personality and wonderful breeding colors, but i got almost all males and after 6 months i was tired of killing fish and wasting money, so i kept the biggest male. But a pair of Carpinte of te Escondido variety would be cool.
 
I would do texas for sure. My favorite fish. They breed at even 3-4 inches so you can upgrade tank when they reach a big size and use the fry for the 75 gallon.

Yeah. They breed small. Usualky you get them at the store @ 2", so wait like 2 months and you might get a pair.

I was really unlucky. I went through about 13 fish and only got 1 that i knew was a girl, and after a really long wait they seemed to not even like each other. How are those odds...
 
I had a breeding pair of Carpintis in a 5' 120 gal, he was 6"-7" she was 4"-5". Over the course of 2 years he went to town on her multiple time's, yes I had dividers, hides that he couldn't get into, eventually after a batch of eggs hatched he killed her.

I wouldn't try breeding them in a 75 gal tank. I defiantly wouldn't be breeding a pair of amph's in a 75.

any decent sized cichlid i wouldn't try breeding in a 4' tank. it may work out when they're smaller but that can be said for pretty much any species that will spawn at a small size.

stanz, you always talk about fire mouths... you're making me want to set a fire mouth tank lol
 
I have a pair of motaguense in a 75 with a divider with holes for just the female. male is about 10in and female about 4-5in seem to be doing fine
 
Why not start out with something easier like convicts or some cryptoheros species ?
 
convicts. just be careful what you ask for, like dempsy and jags they breed like rabbits once they start.
