LOL yeh i'm ignorant ;) thats fkin funny coming from the reputation this site has....

Anyway, I tried it...i went and bought a JD @ 3" I bought him at 1pm and he was eaten by 2pm by my Demasoni,Aurautus and Red Zebra.

Wont be trying that again....

The reputation of this site?

Yep...what part of that didnt you understand?

The part that I asked about. Are you insinuating that this website has a bad rep?

Round of applause for that man.

MFK has some bad rep, suppose people who keep fish in undersized tanks probably don't like us very much...

Thats the main problem on this site....a 100 gallon isent to small for 20 Mbuna mate ;)

The problem is the amount of users are this site cramming 2 Oscars,2 jaguars,2 Flowerhorns and a Arowana in a 4ft tank.

I'm not saying it out of spite, 2 of the bigger other sites I use the word 'MFK' is banned.

The reason for my outburst is you have some people here going OTT at me callign me ignorant etc when in my first post i clearly stated the obvious...that i knew i was doing wrong.....but still I wanted to try.

I tried and failed, learnt the hard way.

I still don't appreciate the lil nerds getting verbal with me behind the safetey of their computer desk.

I'm simply stating my opinion. I get asked this question almost every day at work and It gets old. Furthermore while I do agree that fish farms more than likely keep the water neutral - you simply don't know for sure, unless of course you're suggesting that you've gonne to every fish farm and have statistics for the rest of us. Just because they may not require the same parameters as wild caughts, doesn't mean they shouldn't have it. I see no harm in the fact that I'm suggestiong people keep fish closely to their natural habitat - and I'm even more confused why so many people here seem to think it's wrong and that I'm being an ass. I never questioned his morals or care. It is in my experience from working at 3 fish stores in the past few years and dealing with hundreds if not thousands of people, that the ones who always want to mix are generally the ones who just don't care. Furhtermore, you claim keeping Silver Dollars is unnatrual with Cichlids - which leads me to believe you failed to read exactly what I said. Not to mention that saying most cichlids are carnivorous is a gross and uneducated generalization.
Just to clarify when I said that bit about silver dollars and cichlids I meant keeping silver dollars with cichlids with largely carnivorous diets, as in whatever cichlids are largely carnivorous, not to say that all cichlids they are kept with are. Sorry if that explanation is hard to understand; I can't think of how to word it properly lol.

Whoa chill.

I have been keeping cichlids since 1988 and I am a member of both of those other sites that you speak of. Infact I was on one of those particular sites back when they had a completely different name. Empiracally speaking I find that this site is more casual and is frequented by younger hobbyists, which explains why there is so much activity here. It is not better or worse, just different. If you post a question here you will likely get a large number of responses, some of them might be slightly suspect. That is the nature of the internet, so you just have post questions in multple places and do your research.

One of the other sites that you speak of that censors "MFK" is indeed frequented by some of the greatest hobbyists on the entire planet, but you could post a question there and not get a response for days. So I understand why some people wouldnt like it.

If someone tells you that it is impossible to keep 20 mbuna in a 100 gallon tank, you know that they are both ignorant and lack experience. I say dont let such comments ruin you enjoyment of this site.

The part that I asked about. Are you insinuating that this website has a bad rep?

I believe he's refering to many MFK members unfortunate tendency to jump all over any perceived "deviant care" without any critical thinking or reflection of their own opinions.

My point about Oscars and Silver Dollars is not ridiculous, it is infact quite appropiate. One is a herbivore and the other a piscivore, yet they are both commonly kept together and adapt to a diet of prepared food.

The diet for say, a carnivorous American cichlid and a carnivious "hap" like N. Venustus is identical. A ph of 7-7.5 won't hurt either fish. Fish adapt to their aquarium environments, don't tell me you don't know this after working in 3 fish stores? Otherwise how would people keep livebearers with tetras? I myself work with the importation and retail side of the business, I know exactly what does and doesn't commonly work in people's tanks. Your opinion of what is "proper" or "right'" is irrelevant, the OP is asking will it work.

I'm not saying he should keep softwater carnivores like Peacock Bass with hardwater obligate herbivores like Tropheus, but mixing mid-aggression Central American cichlids with some Malawi fish such as "haps" and Utaka works quite well.

I have carpintes and a festae in with a kenyi and a red top zebra the carpintes is 10" the festae is 7.5" Lots of battles, but no one gets hurt. The kenyi is a big fish trapped in a small fish body. Just like a little yippie dog. I only got the africans because of impatience and could not get the fish I really wanted because I live in the middle of Nebraska.
