Warlock Wants You!

Read my post, i said im not doing live plants, but want to do a saltwater tank with coral eventually, and you couldn't be more vague when it comes to "you'll need some strong bright lights" lol.
.
oops mis-read, Sorry

Well you'll need strong lights for coral as well for a Reef tank. In a 24" tall you'll need to build the Live Rock up high. I ran VHO flouresents on my Reef tank in the day those were the lights to go with. Today I'd go with T5HO same type of fixture you'd use on a freshwater plant tank. I'd Run 10000K mixed with full Actinic bulbs on separate fixture.

Oh I have some VHO fixtures for sale cheap is your interested.. actually there just the ballast boxes you'll need to build your own hood to mount the lights

here's my Reef on VHO

Very nice tank, im probably going to go with some of the T5HOs, does anyone know a good website where i can buy t5ho for a good price?

If your going to eventually go reef tank I suggest getting a Tek T5 fixture from bulkreefsupply.com. They usually offer 20% off bulbs with the purchase of a Tek fixture. The only problem your going to have is the bulbs for coral growing is vastly different from those uses on freshwater. The average price on a new set of bulbs is about $100 on a six bulb fixture. I currently have a Tek T5 fixture and it has six 54w T5 bulbs. It was more than enough for any type of coral in my 75G.

which light spectrum bulbs should i get? as in kelvin... like 6500k, 5500k etc.. And why am i unable to use this setup on a freshwater tank?

You can use it on freshwater but the light spectrum is much different. Most freshwater tanks are around 5500k to 6500k while most reefs are 18000k to 20000k. I plan on checking out my reef lighting on my new freshwater setup but I'm not sure how it's going to look.

okay well if anyone knows, can someone tell me why this high of a Kelvin rating is bad for a freshwater tank?

I doubt it will have negative effects on anything other than plants. Visually would be the most obvious difference. Reef tanks are more blue and purple, but freshwater are more yellowish.

Not to undermine the saltwater forum on this board but the best resource for anything saltwater would be reefcentral.com.
