Oh ok, yeah they look like tiny shiny spots. Mostly along the bottom and side of his body behind where the pink is to the anal fin and about half way up the side of the body. I can only see them from certain angles tho

Will get better as he grows. This was mine throughout his growing time

At around 2 inches

He’s awesome, thanks for sharing! I’ll post another vid of mine in a month. It doesn’t really show in my vid, but color wise it’s not too far off from your fry video, less red in the tail and not as many black blotches as yours, but similar. What did you feed yours at that size? Mine is pretty picky, wont eat pellets, loves brine shrimp and bloodworms, but is picky about the worms, eats some and spits out others.

Starve him for some time. He will eat when he gets hungry enough. Worms are not good for everyday diet, may be once a week.

I had that fish 8 years ago. I used to feed humpy head but I wouldn't recommend it. Better stick with new life spectrum or hikari bio gold plus.

Ok I’ll try that, I have Okiko platinum and red mark pellets and hikari blood red pellets. They’re large so I’ve taking one of each and crushing them up. He spits it out, I’ll starve him for a few day’s. Is brine shrimp good for him? He loves that.

Should be okay but keep meaty foods limited. Everyday is not good.

Feed only okiko platinum pellets twice or thrice a day. Most FH groomers for competition use okiko platinum.. if you can coat spirulina powder on the pellets once a day twice a week, his colours and digestion will improve too. Also give him meaty treats like cleaned chicken( fat and blood clots removed) heart one or twice a week. :)

I wonder what all the competition cichlid keepers, you know, the fish that ALL flowerhorn originated from, fed 20-30 yrs ago before all the FH magic mo jo food was being promoted to suckers, I mean hobbyists? lol Not chicken, and not chicken hearts, either!

My advice, KISS - keep it simple stupid, find a decent quality pellet and keep your fish on those for life. No need for added protein/fat, especially mammal based, or fancy over priced specialty FH food.

Thanks, mind if I ask how you can tell at this size? It’s barely over an inch. From my experience with peacocks and haps, it’s too small to tell, but it sounds like it’s different with FH
I’m definitely keeping this one, it’s got a nice attitude already, the other was and still is skittish, this guy nips my hands when I clean the tank
I've bred a few batches, and as far as gold base go, I was able to get an idea of nice pearling or not at around an inch, maybe a touch bigger. With my batch of ZZ I have 2 growouts I kept just to get an idea what traits the pair would pass on, and they started pearling around an inch also but not as vivid. At about 1.75" they're starting to develop nicely and showing good body shape. With the gold base, the pearling showed up heavier early, but the body shape was still a guessing game (whether deformities present...etc). Long story not as long, IMO people shouldn't be selling anything under 2"-2.5" because it's a gamble on what you're going to end up with. At that time you'll have a good idea on pearling, and any deformities will show, especially gill curl. Again, stressing that this is just from my experience with them.
