Washing old filter pads from HOB???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I use only HOB filters on my tanks and they all have scrubies for media which i do maintenace on 4-5 times a year every change of the season i rinse the scrubbies and take apart the filter for cleaning.

Thanks everyone. This is great news. Ive been spending anywhere from $50 a month on HOB Filter Pads in the past. This will easily save me $600 a year!

Just enough to hire a company to break down, transport, and reassemble my 125 and 75 gallons when I move in 4 weeks... :/ unless anyone else here knows of any cheaper solutions or companies? I suppose this may be a question for a different thread haha

I don't think old carbon is harmful. actually, now that I'm thinking about it, it possibly could be. its is basically charcoal. maybe it could rot over time?

somebody help us out on this one!!

if it doesn't rot, its probably actually beneficial (hosting bacterial colonies).

I have some that are over two years old.

my pads in one wet dry are the same.... ever few months i throw in washer with a lil bleach and clean them real well...... some types dont take to bleach but just the washer alone cleans very well....

I was going to buy filter replacements, but after reading MFK a while back, I learned to rinse them in aquarium water.

anyone got an answer on this???

Not rot...that is the answer.

Carbon is just that...carbon. As in the element carbon. It has no food value and can not be broken down into anything simpler.

i've had some pads (aquaclear) for almost 2 years. i gently rinse once every 2 weeks to get the derbis out. the pads are still in good condition (if alittle faded). i don't even use the carbon bag it came with (filled with CR to get more BB)
