sorry for your big loss... how is the puffer after all this...

GSP should be in brackish converted to marine and species only also. Would not be surprised if he is taking some of them out. Also, when stressed they do release a toxin.

Kev, dont want to be rude but really dont know where your getting your puffer info from...

puffers do NOT release toxins when stressed, the TTX poison is in there system, mainly the liver if i remember correctly, so unless they were picking at his dead body they do not release toxins...

The only "puffer" type fish i know of that releases toxins is the box fish, which does so only when it dies causing whats known as "nuking" a tank and its occupants...

Now as for being aggressive, yes, GSP's are among some of the most aggressive and known fin nippers as with most puffers, so really should fly solo, or in GSP's case a species only tank with plenty of room for each puffer...

Not that i felt it needed an explanation but the puffer was in quarentine with the feeders it was given to me and i had no where to put him until i converted him. I decided to take apart my feeder tank and had netted up any left over feeders and i obviously completely forgot about the puffer. When i turned my back back to the tank i saw everyone nipping and chasing the puffer he kept inflating and deflating as people nipped so i got him out. When i turned back 3 fish had suddenly been paralyzed the ones that had been most aggressively Pursuing it. They were just stunned but breathing and then dead within minutes. I did see a common thing of their lips being black. I checked every other possibility ammonia chemicals heater electricity everything.... Nothing made sense but the puffer issue. Its my understanding and again correct me if im wrong toxicity levels among puffers and others can vary from fish to fish? Well i told you all what went down ill let you guys chime in on your opinions. I still had a ton of fish survive its what makes me believe it wasnt something in the water? Make sense?

Ps puffer is fine last time i checked.

^ Really toxins in skin? i honestly didn't know that...

I know that the toxins are in there system, but not on the outside, otherwise, how come when other animals / fish attack puffers in the wild they don't die? If said animal ate the puffer, then yes, most likely they will die from the poisoning, but just from in essence biting their body, i've never heard of fish getting poisoned? Coz if that was the case, my yellow lab Chiclid would be long dead by now...

Also, i think its been proven that in an aquarium setting that puffers lose a lot if not all their toxins due to their diets etc? although can't remember 100% if that was scientifically proven...

Yes, most toxin in liver and ovaries, but also in skin, but less concentration. Even tiny slight toxin in muscle, therefore feel tingle on lips when eating fugu! Not just lemon juice, hahah!

^ As i said, i really didn't know that, so i'll just have to take your word on it... but as far as eating fugu... i didn't think they ate the skin... only the meat itself...

Eitherway, as i said, i really don't know how much or how little toxin they have on their skin (if any), so for the moment i'll leave it as debatable (in my mind) unless some one can prove otherwise?

When eat fugu, not eat skin. But what I mean about eating fugu meat ---> lip tingling is: when eat fugu, we eat meat part, but even meat part without skin has very tiny tiny residual dose of toxin ---> lip tingling, but not enough for death. Also, fugu testes are delicacy, but need pass special exam to make sure can tell difference between fugu testes, fugu liver and fugu ovaries so avoid death (not always successful).

^ yeah, i've eaten fugu before, and knew they didnt eat the skin, but thought with you being Japanese you might have had some insight i didnt know about when eating fugu...

But yes, the meat definitely has some TTX toxins, but as you said, mainly in the liver etc is where its concentrated...

So back to the original statement about puffer skin containing toxins, im still not 100% convinced, since as i said, my yellow lab would long be dead if that was the case, since he keeps trying to nip my fahaka and hes been with her almost 2 years with no side effects...
