watching my ray slow die

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
And these Hystrix just keep dieing. Damn, that is so sad. Maybe it's the way they are caught that is doing this to them.

Being wild caught is extremely stressful on any ray, but I think for little ones it must be alot more stressful on them being that they are so much more delicate. Then they under go shipping, acclimation and all the re-acclimations that follow. I have heard people say that bigger rays have a harder time being shipped but for little ones to go through all that must be even harder.

If I knew, or if I was told that there was a 50% of survival I would have never did it. I feel so terrible and at the same time I am out $$$. I think I will stick to my retics, wait for Bella to send me some pups or get an big ass tank and get motoros.

But oh how do I love hystrix!!!!

sorry to hear that..

these hystrix are super small and fragil they are hard to keep you need to get bigger they'll do much better

It is always a gamble with live animals. Sorry for you loss, it is very frustrating.

You may want to also re-examine:
-acclimation procedure
-quarantine procedure
-requesting/paying for a seller to hold the rays for 2-3 weeks before shipping
-requesting shipper to purge rays before shipping
-as mentioned, buy slightly older/larger rays *even with captive bred babies, I feel that most responsible breeders are holding the clutch for 3-4 weeks before shipping, your little guys looked very young*
