water change gone wrong?

Not to get to far off topic but what if you were using a python? That adds water right into the tank so how are you supposed to treat it first, or do you just empty with it and fill with buckets? Or add chemicals as you go?

Yeah I don't agree with his quote. I use a python on my larger and smaller tanks and I just dump in some dissolved safe within 30 seconds or so of the tap turning back on into the tank. Never had any issues from doing so, even when I used prime and the not-so-great voogle-equivalent.

Avoid water changes after substantial rains or local water main breaks or drought. Water treatment facilities often go overboard on chems during these circumstances

That happened to me once I did a 50% water change directly from the tap unfortunately and the water company had possibly just added some extra chlorine the day after I had my 35cm BGK dead 1 dead clown loach and when breathing really fast I managed to save the one breathing vastly by holding him on top of the air bubbles face down for about 1h

prime or safe is fine for the fish up to 5 times the recommended dose, lets say you do a 90% water change as i do on all my tanks, or fin level, i set my water temps off the python by feel, dose the tank for tank size then fill the tank up. little prime not going to hurt your fish, chlorine will.

Oh OK, so drain the tank and right before you start to fill it add the dechlorinator. I use stress coat though, is that OK to add prior or just safe and prime since it says "add to new water prior to filling" I believe?

it rained a lot here in philly saturday and sunday and also i think wednesday. hoping that was the reason and that it does not happen again because i plan on getting an elephant nose and i know they are sensitive. lesson learned

safe and prime the same thing, prime is liquid form, safe is powder form and more concentrated, it will handle ammonia, nitrite and chlorine for up to 48 hours. I change out about 800g a week so i use safe, large bottle of prime about 18 bucks, will do 2000.00 gallons of water. safe 52 bucks or so on amazon for a 2.5LB jar do 200,000 gallons of water. its a no brainier. and best water conditioner on the market

+1 , always.

I guess everybody has their own experience and views...I am never very fussy on when I add the Prime. Usually when a tank is filling, at some point. I change quite a bit of water, generally 50% to 90% (or more!) at a time and I do it once or twice a week per tank. Never, ever had an issue. Fish happy and healthy, they even play in the incoming water. I suppose every location is different, but here in Toronto adding conditioner during or even at the end of the water change is fine. I just make sure I add it before the canisters get turned back on, to preserve the biological filter.
