Water change with ray's

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
2 x 30% is better it stimulates rain fail

if you need to be doing 80-90% per week then your bio load is to much or why would you need to do so much

Careful with the assumptions please. I'm not new.

My bioload isn't too much. I elect to do 80-90%. I do it because I can, because it's easy and because it takes barely any longer than doing half as much would take. Cleaner water, healthier fish. Simple equation.

You have no need to do 80-90% water changes per week unless your bio load is very high or to high the point of water changes is to remove nitrate nothing more if your water params are fine and you have no nitrates then you have no need to do water changes what would be the point

I can change the whole of my 1000 gal tank water everyday via a drip if I want and I can but have no need to so I just do 100-150 gal per day

I can take my big tiger fish out my tank kick it around the floor put it back in the tank and he would be fine but I don't do do it BUT I CAN that doesn't make it right or mean I should do it just because I can

I'm also not new and find if there's no need to do something why bother

Bingo. Same reason I do my 50% daily.

Just because you say it's wrong to change as much water as I want doesn't mean it's actually wrong. My nitrate and DOCs are less if I change 90% of the water than they would be if I changed 50%, regardless of what actual number either of those are. Simple irrefutable math.

Except you have more filters on your tank than you need - why bother? And you're lecturing me on water changes?

With all the discussion I tried a 75% change for this week; usually I do a 40% but my nitrates were always up(other parameters were 0). So far no ill affect on my ray and the nitrates are more respectable.

... I am still wondering how people have time to do a 30-50% water change daily... Please explain... What do you do in life and how is that done?

Hahaha its the same as taking my dog for a walk or keeping my bird cages clean. I work full time and still find the time easily to take care of my pets. I try and pull 30 percent at least 3 times a week. But i can only do this when my 14 month old girl goes to bed. Its a part of my life ritual. Every saturday morning is also dedicated to my fish! I do it bc I enjoy it!

With 1.5" tubing, on my 125 it takes me less than 5 minutes to drain my tank 50%- then I add prime, test the water to the temp I want, and drag the hose over, and fill it.

While that is filling, I drain all the other tanks that are getting changes as well.

I get home at 5, and I am done with changes around 6- and that's with doing 5 tanks all over 75 gallons- plus feeding them all.

Still think changing 80-90% is to much to much can change in the new what're PH KH GH everything in life is best done in small amounts

Like I said the main thing and the reason we do water changes is to lower nitrates you will never have 0 nitrates if you are using water from the tap

You are gaining nothing by doing more than 50% twice per week unless you tank is over stocked or you are doing it to buff the PH but even if it's to but the PH large changes in Ph change are not good so still smaller changes twice per week are better to buff the PH as the changes are smaller

High nitrates are not such a bad sign as it shows you filters are working throw the cycle well if all your other parameters are 0

If your nitrate are out of control and no matter what size or how many water changes you do your nitrates are still high then you are over stocked simple

My 350 gal was over stocked I always knew that and no matter how many or what size the water changes I done my nitrates were always above 100 ppm and rays will breed grow fine and remain healthy in nitrates of that level

You will always be fighting a losing battle with nitrates and rays unless you use RO or a drip system but if you are not using then 2 x 30% water changes per week are just right to freshen up the water as regular intervals
90% once per week is just to stressful for the rays in my eyes

But hey everyone has there own routein and everyone can do what's best for them and what fits into other commitments
