Water change with ray's

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Water changes depend on your tank, your filtration and your stock. The more stock, the more water changes and the more the amount.
If you are under filtering, you will need to change more. If you over filter, you will need to change less, but that depends on your stock limit also.
I do a 40% change every week. Sometimes Ill even go about a week and a half, but on average, its 40% a week. You just need to watch your tank perm and find out what works best for your stock.
Clean water is a must to keep your stock healthy.
Every tank is different, stock is different. So just find out what works best for you.

lols... if you did your water changes everyday it is either ur too free or too stupid to maintain an aquarium.... fish do not need so much water changes, even on weekly basis is more than enough....

i agreed with others who said "unless underfiltered"... this is quite true...

aged waters contains more nutrients and much more stable compared to new water..... then again do not clean up ur massive filter on daily basis too....

fish came from mother nature and let the mother nature take care of the fish... just leave it alone for at least a week.

finally, if you did water changes daily vs weekly, it makes no different... your fish still stays the same and in other cases your fish may grow slower than it should be..

just sharing my two cents....

I wouldn't pay 1c for Your 2c. Fish don't grow slower in cleaner water. Go look up Jack Wattley and his experiments with water changes. Aged water contains nutrients for plants but the DOCs are not good for fish.

Mother nature provides these fish cleaner water 24/7 - rivers don't only flow once a week or once a month.

And I don't get why people are on this underfiltered bandwagon. It's nonsense.

Oh wow and you're the guy with a 1+ year old ray that's still 4.5" but you're handing out advice?

Thanks to the two fellas who answered my question. It is good to hear other fish keepers tell their tales. Good point you make though, I suppose I will try to look at it from that perspective and do a water change more than once every week or two. Like you say it does not take long, even with a normal python and two tanks it still probably takes less than 45 minutes. I wish I had 1.5'' tubing to do water changes, that would make it much quicker. Good information and I say do as much as you want or need. Not going to harm anything, bacteria remains in filters, the fish will appreciate constant clean water that the filters cannot renew. Just don't do all those water changes and clean all the filters because that may cause a slight issue.

i did have to wonder about that too...

well, although im new to rays... but im not new to fish..... i've been rearing fish since im a young kid...

just part of my sharing on water change... up to you to decide if my comment is useful or not... after all no point argueing... we're here to share not argue...

I have a 200gallons indoor pond with 1 eheim 3455 and 1 eheim 2028 filtration system.

How much water change weekly should I do?
Is the filration sufficient for my rays?

At the end of the day water changes are all down to what the owner feels happy with it's the owner who has and uses the test kit so it's only you who knows how much water to change

I couldn't change 90% even if I wanted to as it would be dam cruel having all my fish with half there body's out of the water

It's not like I keep just rays and it would stress all my other fish out having to be crammed into 4 inch of water

I just can't see why anyone would need to change more than 50% in one go sorry but that's my opinion which we are all entitled to

Complete FAIL.
maybe this attitude is why Discus imported from Malaysia always come with so many nasty bacterial diseases
