guys i dont think he needs to do that much water change. its just 1 aro in a 150g. the bacteria in the filter needs ammonia and the arowana barely produces enough by itself. maybe a 25% every 2 weeks is good. its just my opinion.
Actually this is not completely correct. Beside nitrate, ammonia, and all those chemical created by waste, fish also release hormone in the water, so frequently water change will promote fish growth.
Yes you're right, but you can't monitor those things so you have to base it on nitrate levels. And I doubt they [hormones etc] build up faster than nitrate, especially when feeding meaty foods to a predatory fish.
vaine111 I certainly wasn't calling you stupid or talking about you specifically. Although have you checked your parameters to see if there is any point in doing such large water changes? If not you may find you're simply stressing your fish more than needed and wasting electricity heating up the new water.
You got two options here. I preferred to use option 1 unless you got all the time in the world to do waterchanges.
1)I say 30% water change a week is plenty.
2)Discus owners swear it's best to do daily or every other day water changes then to do 50% a week. I advised against doing 50% a week. Just imagine the environment you've been acclimated to then all of a sudden the temperature or weather changed to the extreme.

Daily is done for juveniles and it has to be consistent. Discus are not the same as arowanas. These fish are easily stunted in the slightest by improper water conditions. As for 50% a week, it can work but there are many variables to consider such as amount of foods given, amount of wastes, number of fish, etc.
