I know when doing water changes it is very important to keep the water the same in temperature and in other levels my question is when it comes to temperature it's nearly impossible to get it exactexactly the same as the existing temperature in your tank what is the rule of thumb when it comes to temperature how far off can you be before it can cause your fish to be stressed out or extremely stressed out

Slightly warmer than tank temp is ok, I have done this for years. Takes approx 30min to fill up a 170G, raise temp from 79G to 82 without any problems. Still a rather gradual change. You don't want the new water to be colder though, not good for the fish or your heater usage.

Ditto. Slightly colder water changes can be good in some cases (e.g. triggers spawning in some fish).

I actually have also been doing my wc's this way for years without fatalities.

I feel the water before turning the python valve on, I use to do the thermometer back and forth till I got over my over reaction-ism some years back. feels close fill her up. not hot, or overly warm, and not cold, just tepid. and fill her up. 5 or 6 degrees high or low not going to hurt the fish or they die every time it rains in the wild. And if looking to spark spawning a cooler temp flow can at times signal spawning.

Don't overthink it, just add what feels okay on your hand.
I tend to add cold water. It has helped to spawn Garra and Corydoras.
Use hotter water if you want to spawn Odoe.
There is no right or wrong.

Usually I try to get mine within a degree or 2. I've had it drop 5 degrees in my 90 and the fish freaked me out so I'm extra careful on that tank.

Sometimes I purposely do like a 15% cold change on the guppy/cory tank though, with no ill effects, they seem to actually like it.
