water changes and temperature

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've got my water changes off to a fine art now, i could do them blindfolded. I did make one big mistake one time though and it taught me a good lesson about getting complacent. I was filling up my tank with water from the mixer taps in the kitchen and unbeknown to me my son started having a hot shower upstairs. Most of the hot water got directed to the shower and left me with freezing cold water going into my tank. I didn't realise until my RTGG started freaking out. I soon picked up on what was wrong. Now if i'm doing a water change i ensure that no one turns any other hot taps on anywhere in the house. It's taught me to be on my toes at all times in this hobby, never get complacent.

Lol, always have done it by touch, never 1 problem.
+1.

A lot of times my tank will be off by 5 degrees, in either direction, and the fish appears unfazed.

This is a good reason to get those inexpensive digital thermometers with high/low alarms.

.............now, if they would just make an inexpensive and simple device that warns you when you're about to flood the tank

I think this function being use in some filter brand to notify owner about their filter is clog and water flow is reduced, it's same concept but using on different way.

Call me crazy but I do 40-50 percent straight cold to avoid metals from the water heater. I do this in the dead of winter as well. Not an issue.
