Water changes SUCK. Here's my automated system!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nice set up. I tried doing that but after my sump drained the refill flow from my 1/4" couldn't refill fast enough and my sump went dry. Now I have to do it manually anyway by shutting off the tank pump before the sump refills back up.

That means you had the pump on too long. You need a digital timer so you can control it down to the minute. When it gets close to the minimum water level your sump needs, have it shut off.

What? No more Discus? No leds? What's this world coming to?LOL. Next I'll hear that you've gone completely "underground" and are currently raising Asian Arowana/ African Butterfly fish "Hybrids" for indoor pond- fighting purposes! LOL. Nice job on the water changing system Jose. I'm gonna have to take a stab at installing something similar on my 225. I'll have to get a sump first though, as my setup doesn't currently have one.

Great work!! More good ideas to try incorporate into my new set up...

Hey Aaron! Long time no talk. I see you're still at the LED craze on plantedtank. Nice work as usual :) Discus - man. No matter what I did I had issues with them. Everything was ideal and by the book. Who knows what it was. Maybe something from my local water source that they didn't like. Oh well. LEDs yeah I just had to go back to the fluorescents. I missed the color too much. I love LEDs, but they just don't have the color spectrum of a nice T5HO bulb. If the planted tank bug strikes again, you'll be the first to know when I need another controller :D

I know what you're saying about the Discus, sometimes it just doesn't matter how well you try to care for them, they just don't thrive. I've failed every time that I've tried to keep them. As far as the led lighting goes give it some more time. We're working on solutions to the "spectrum deficiencies" that may be responsible for the difficulty in keeping certain plant species under led lighting. Red plants seem to be especially susceptible to "greening up" because of it. Newer "multi-chip, multi-color arrays" are just starting to become available that will hopefully offer a solution. Yeah- if the bug strikes again, gimme a yell and I'll hook you up.

impressive idea, useful reference for my next tank project..
thanks for sharing

Great system you got there...

Shame that this is the type of thing that you could never get away with doing in Hong Kong unless you literally renovate your whole apartment around the tank setup... and even then theres no guarantees you could do pull it off...

Nice Nice Nice!!
