I have a 75 gallon tank that I do a water change of 35 gallons every week or two. However, I know my water bill is probably going to suck because of it in the future...

I had heard a fishkeeper on another forum say that he/she did water changes to his/her tank by taking out the necessary amount of water, "cleaning" and "buffing" it and then putting the water back into the tank as "new" water.

Is it safe to do? And if so, what would I need to use in order to re-new the water?

Just change the water, the extra 75 gallons on your water bill per month can't be that bad.

Unless this guys "polishing" method removes nitrates and god knows what other hormones etc. that build up in aquarium water, then he is not doing his fish any good either....

Burt :)

^^^ agree

I know that my water only went up at the most $20 a week and I do a 50% or greater water change a week on all the following tanks 125, 75, 10, 5. Thats an extra 430 gals a month. I know water prices vary depending where you are but if mine only went up $20 a month for an extra 430gal then you should not worry and just do you water changes when you need to and if you do get a big bill then look into other change methods like this "buffering" you are talking about

i rent a back house and my landlord pays the water bill.. i like this setup and dont want to tick him off so the bigger/more tanks i get... the less i shower....

as far as recycling yer water... in order to do it correctly its going to cost less to just use new water

hmm i do 100gallons once a week sometimes twice on my lage tank.... 50gallons a week on my 90 .... 10 on my alisnapper and 25 on my 45 gallon.... my waterbill isnt that high either.....

but my fish are worth the lil bit extra $ a month to keep them healthy... i wouldnt try to reuse any of my water.... wanna be more conservative use tank water for plants or grass to flush the toilet etc...

Hmmm, I don't even know what my water bill is really. I just happen to live with my mom still (for the moment) and she was complaining about the water bill and what not.

Oh well, yeah I think I'd be safer off just using new water, but thanks anyway guys.

75G = less than 2 bath tubs, blame the bill on the wifes bubble baths 8-)

jokes aside if u look at it that way i dont it should matter much on the price you use more water washing you car.

i can promise you that if you clean up more around the house your mom will not notice the waterbill

don't overload your tank and just do weekly 15% water changes. use a small powerhead attached to a hose to remove the water and don't use a python as it waste alot of water. I don't think your landlord is gonna be able to tell the diffrence.
