i perform water changes on my 90 gallon bi-weekly but i was wondering what is the point of doing it? what benefits does it provide for the fish?

What are your nitrates after 7 days? If their not 40ppm at the most, their is no point in wasting money doing WC's twice a week. Once a week is fine. Doing WC's more than once a week if your nitrates are under 40ppm is only helping the fish grow faster. Which is fine, but not needed.

Read up on the nitrogen cycle

Lots of reasons for doing water changes, but depends on the needs of the fish and a whole host of other things which attribute to how many times a week you should clean your tank...

Who mentioned doing WC's twice a week? It would be GREAT if he did, but he said biweekly.

Biweekly = every two weeks.

Second, why let your nitrates get to 40? Mine never reach 20.

As Redearsunfish said, closed systems need replenishing. We don't want our fish swimming around in their own waste.

He is not saying he does water changes twicw a week. He said bi-weekly. Fellow forum members have given good reason for doing water changes.

Oops, must have read it wrong or something. 40ppm is an acceptable nitrale level which most hobbyists agree is okay. Works for me also. Sometimes with larger tanks even with FX5's and everything else after a week 40ppm happens. 20ppm in a week would be great, but can't keep it that low without a low stock in my tanks.
