i perform water changes on my 90 gallon bi-weekly but i was wondering what is the point of doing it? what benefits does it provide for the fish?

Doing WC's more than once a week if your nitrates are under 40ppm is only helping the fish grow faster. Which is fine, but not needed.

Biweekly = every two weeks.
Second, why let your nitrates get to 40? Mine never reach 20.
As Redearsunfish said, closed systems need replenishing. We don't want our fish swimming around in their own waste.
