Water Changes

 • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That is true, water changes only dilute the nitrates which still accumalate.

I try and do 100% water changes at least once a week but sometimes more than that. If I'm lazy I will do a partial but not long after, the tank receives a full 100%.

How often should be according to your water test.

I'm no expert, but I dont believe a 100% change is ever a good idea.

50% weekly is overkill too, unless you are overstocked, and dont have plants.

It may make a difference for different fish, but my polys are skittish for a week if I move a rock, so a 100% water change would be torture

Im a total newb on this aquarium stuff. What size tank are we talking about doing a 100% water change on? I'm getting a 75g tank and the thought of draining it like that each week seems a bit steep.

I understand where the thought is on nitrate concentration though. Won't live plants utilize them for growth?

I like to think of it as "all the water in the tank should be changed in a month"

Because ideally you should do 25% once a week so that means all the water in your tank gets changed.

Oh and I don't know about everybody else, but I love cleaning my tank! It's not a chore. :)

I have plants and do weekly 50% and only see my nitrates stay just s bit above the level of the tap water. I did drip system and had the acne results. I have gone 2 weeks and only done a single 50% so I would arguee that you don'tneed to do 50 per week but prime and water a cheap so then again what does it hurt. Then on the dark side you ser people never do water changes only top off and add trace elements so you can debg til you die about water changes.

Edit.: four 25% weekly changed in one mo.th is not equalto 100%

Gotta be careful with well water. It might be in your best interest to invest in some reverse osmosis water for your changes.

As for me I do a weekly change of 50-75% and only use dechlorinator and tank salt. Any other chemicals tend to be bad for the fish and should be avoided if possible. Ive had great success growing out peacock bass at much faster rates with this method and they dont seam to mind. My water comes out of the hose, and temp doesnt drop too much for too long

What's wrong with well water?

I have well water and on all my tanks over 5 years now, I have not added any prime or any chemicals...I just add water from sink and that's it..my fish are fine...guess I'm lucky...now if I had city water id use some prime...

The hardness of well water may not jive with creatures that require soft water. Bottom line: test your water before adding it to your tank, so you know what adjustments you need to make! Whether it's pH changes, chlorine/chloramine neutralizers, heavy metal neutralizers, temperature, fracking compounds, , etc. Water is very different depending on where you live.

25% per week does not mean all the water in the tank gets changed in a month. Think about it ;)

If there's 4 weeks in a month and you do 25% a week then it adds up to 100% do the math.

He means the water mixes thus u aren't draining 100% of the OLD water. 200% imo is all the water old and new.

Wc depends ENTIRELY ON BIO LOAD!! TEST FOR NITRATES AND WHEN THEY HIT 40+ DO A WC. MORE FISH MORE WASTE MORE WC NEEDED! Also overfeeding will also make the need for wc even more necessary
