Water Changes

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think what he means is that even though you change 25% of your water, once you've added the new water it will mix with the old, therefore after one month you would technically still have some of your old water (from the previous month) left in the tank. But I see what you mean, that's how I think of it.

He means the water mixes thus u aren't draining 100% of the OLD water. 200% imo is all the water old and new.

Wc depends ENTIRELY ON BIO LOAD!! TEST FOR NITRATES AND WHEN THEY HIT 40+ DO A WC. MORE FISH MORE WASTE MORE WC NEEDED! Also overfeeding will also make the need for wc even more necessary

Can you use the water test to tell when to do water changes? Or should I just stick to once a week?

Does anybody know where the cheapest place to get the API master kit is + shipping? Thanks
I use google shopping search. enter specific product and click sort according "to price". then compare shipping.

The only need for wc is to keep nitrates at a low level (ppm) so changing water with little to no nitrates (0-30ppm) imo isnt necessary, personally I wait till 40-60ppm and do a 50% wc. I normally do a wc and test my water 4-6 days later and if its got high nitrate then I change. Very easy and convienent to know the exact levels! Petsmart has it for 29.99 that's pretty decent!

When adding new water make sure temp is relative to tank temp and prime is used, your fish will live a long happy life with this method!

Also, if u notice ur levels barely dropping after a wc then u need to vac ur substrate cuz the waste isn't removed with wc! Also cleaning ur filter will help reduce levels, its a good idea to keep track and log ur maintenence, in may I did 6 50-60% wc and my ph Is stable

you do know that it is debatable about wc's being done "for nitrates only", &/or "only for things that water param tests show", right?
Fish put other things in water that we can't test for, which also effect growth and vigor.
I know there is disagreement & don't want to argue. people can use the search feature and read for themselves.

Changing water according to nitrate levels is the widest acceptable 'safe' rationale.
The question is only about whether it can be falling short of being biologically positive.

So true! Do water change not just for remove nitrates, but also think remove so much dissolved organic compounds (DOC's) and even hormones. Some big fish secrete hormones into water to stop smaller fish growing bigger to catch up with them!

Also, think water change not just remove bad things, but also can add good things, eg, KH, GH, even inert sodium ions and chloride ions help maintain osmotic / homeostatic equilibrium.

Go water change! For proof, look at discus farming in SE Asia. They have plenty rain so plenty perfect source water, so no need for filter! Just constant regular flow-through changing water all day all night! We use filters because recycle water better for society also better for our wallet also keep our neighbour happy if in dry area and you waste water your neighbour hate you and puncture your car tyre if you waste water when everyone else saving water!
